Adverse effects of oral tetracyclines include
• photosensitization, which can result in severe sunburn
• gastrointestinal upset
• azotemia in rare instances
• oral or vaginal candidiasis in susceptible patients
• potentiated effect of certain anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
• reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives
• purple discoloration of skin and cartilage due to deposition of minocycline in the
tissues; looks like bruising
• permanent discoloration of teeth and bones in children younger than 14 years
