Difficulty having Anking Step Deck updated with new cards or updated cards

Hello,

I am wondering why my step deck is not getting any of the new cards that have been added.

I recently looked at a friends anking deck, and it looks like some had their most recent anking cards added from 2026. I was looking for some specific cards that one friend had and couldn’t find it as it was from 2026. The newest card from my step deck was from April 2025. I also saw that my friend had about 33000 cards whereas I only had about 31000. I am just wondering if we have different settings set or why I don’t have the updated cards? I pay for ankihub and tried clicking the sync ankihub from the bar at the top of my desktop (same bar with file, edit, view, etc.). I tried clicking the sync button on the top of the anki page but that button requries me to sign into ankiweb which I do not have.

Thanks in advance!

You’re most likely on an older / different version of the AnKing Step deck than your friend, or your AnkiHub sync isn’t fully set up for that deck.

Here are the main things to check:

1. Confirm you’re subscribed to the correct AnkiHub deck

  1. In Anki, go to Tools → AnkiHub.
  2. Make sure you’re logged into AnkiHub with the account that has the paid subscription.
  3. Click on “Manage Decks” (or “Browse Shared Decks” → then filter for AnKing Step/AnKing Overhaul).
  4. Verify:
    • You’re subscribed to the same deck and same version your friend is using (e.g. “AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 vX”).
    • The deck in your collection shows the AnkiHub chain/link icon next to it, indicating it’s linked to AnkiHub.

If your deck isn’t linked to AnkiHub (no AnkiHub icon), you’ll need to link or re-import from the AnkiHub page your subscription gives access to.

2. Make sure full-sync for new notes is enabled

In Tools → AnkiHub (or in the deck’s AnkiHub settings):

  • Look for something like “Sync notes” / “Sync new notes” / “Apply updates” for that deck.
  • Confirm that:
    • Note updates are enabled (so changes to existing cards come through).
    • New notes are allowed to be added from AnkiHub to your collection.

If “don’t add new notes” or similar is turned on, you’ll be missing newer cards and end up with fewer total cards than your friend (e.g. ~31k vs ~33k).

3. Run an AnkiHub sync from the add-on (ignore AnkiWeb)

You do not need AnkiWeb for AnkiHub sync to work.

  1. In Anki’s top menu: Tools → AnkiHub → Sync (or click the AnkiHub sync icon if you have one).
  2. Let it fully complete; if there are prompts about conflicts or large update downloads, accept the updates from AnkiHub.
  3. Afterwards, check:
    • Total card count in your Step deck (right-click deck → Info).
    • Creation date of the newest cards: in the Browser, sort by Created and scroll to the bottom to see if 2026 cards appear.

4. Check if you’re filtering or excluding some cards locally

Differences of a couple thousand cards can also come from:

  • Suspended cards: In the Browser, search your Step deck and then search is:suspended. Compare to your friend.
  • Filtered/custom decks: Ensure you’re looking at the main Step deck, not a smaller filtered deck.
  • Deleted cards: If you deleted some tags/topics, you may be missing whole chunks of the deck.

AnkiHub won’t re-add cards you manually deleted unless you fully re-import and relink.

5. If nothing works, comparing with your friend helps support

If, after all of this:

  • You’re subscribed to the same AnkiHub deck,
  • New notes are enabled,
  • AnkiHub sync runs successfully,

but you still only have cards up to April 2025 and ~31k total, then there may be a deck-linking or version issue specific to your account.

In that case, it’s helpful to:

  1. Post:
    • A screenshot of Tools → AnkiHub → Manage Decks showing the Step deck entry.
    • A screenshot of the deck’s Info window (right-click deck → Info) showing note and card counts.
  2. Ask your friend to share:
    • Their deck name/version.
    • Their deck Info counts.

With that, the mods/AnkiHub team can see exactly which version you’re on and whether you need to relink or re-import from the correct AnkiHub deck page.

If you’d like, reply in that topic with:

  • The exact deck name as shown in your sidebar, and
  • A screenshot of the AnkiHub settings for that deck,

and I can walk you through the next exact steps.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Can you specify for me which new cards it is that you’re looking for? I’m not aware of many new cards having been added to the deck recently, nor any from 2026 (new cards are not frequently added, with rare exceptions, given to the existing coverage of the deck and the rarity with which new testable material is introduced to the USMLE exams)

Separately, it’s hard to say much about your friends collection, as it is entirely possible that your friend’s collection has older, or out of date, cards rather than newer ones. Hard to say for sure without being able to see their collection, though

A couple of things here:

  • If you have an active AnkiHub account, have the add-on installed, and have synced with AnkiHub then you should have all of the updates available. Presuming those things are in place, there won’t be a lot to indicate that you’re missing much of anything
  • AnkiWeb is a separate service, not directly related to AnkiHub. It is advisable, though, that you create an AnkiWeb account as this serves to create a cloud storage of your local collection which is useful for syncing across devices as well as for storing a backup.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

I saw on my friends anking deck that he had some spinal cord structure identification cards and when I looked at the date it was added, it was in 2026 and it did not look like he had made those cards. I tried looking in various decks that his card was linked to but I could not find it. He said had a unlocked a few of the same time and I could not find any.

I’m sorry to say I don’t know. Without being able to see the card in question, or your friend’s collection, I’m afraid I can’t say much about it. I don’t believe there have been many, or any, cards added in 2026 and certainly not enough to account for a 2k difference in collection size

It may be that the card was imported in 2026, or that the due date was in 2026, rather than the date created. But again, I can’t be sure without being able to see your friend’s collection

In either case, though, I strongly suspect that it’s not due to 2,000+ cards having been added in the last three or so months; I can say with some confidence that that’s not likely to be the underlying cause here, at least
