Image Occlusion media missing locally despite Media Sync: Idle

I’m subscribed to a private AnkiHub deck (FPOL), and many Image Occlusion cards have broken answer/original masks locally.

  • Media sync shows: Idle

  • Tools → Check Media reports 538 missing files

  • The base images and some question masks are present locally, but many -A.svg / -O.svg Image Occlusion mask files are missing

  • The same affected notes/masks render correctly on AnkiHub web

  • I tried Reset local changes on one affected note and then synced again; the missing mask was not restored

  • I have not unsubscribed because this is a private deck and I do not want to risk losing access

  • I have also avoided deleting unused media or resetting the whole deck because I have local edits

Example missing file:
015b5f97ba5640968f198f5044b54e69-ao-1-A.svg

I uploaded logs/data from the AnkiHub add-on.

Log filename:
ankihub_addon_debug_info_rmeiselman_1787775439.zip

  1. Anki version: 26.08.1 (39e4b0b4)
  2. AnkiHub add-on version: 2026-08-25.1
  3. OS: macOS
  4. Issue occurs on Anki desktop; mobile not yet tested

Could you please check why media sync is reporting Idle while these Image Occlusion SVG files are still missing locally, and whether there is a way to force a full media re-download without resetting my local card edits?

Reading: Private AnkiHub deck missing Image Occlusion media locally

It looks like you’ve just copied the template text for the :person_raising_hand: Support category into your topic, but haven’t described your actual issue yet.

To help you with the “Private AnkiHub deck missing Image Occlusion media locally” problem, could you please add:

  1. What exactly is happening?

    • Are Image Occlusion cards showing a red “missing image” icon?
    • Are the images visible on AnkiHub but not in your local Anki?
    • Is this on desktop, mobile, or both?
  2. Your setup

    • Anki version (e.g. 24.06.3)
    • AnkiHub add-on version (from Tools → Add-ons → AnkiHub → View Files / about dialog)
    • OS (Windows/macOS/Linux)
  3. What you’ve already tried (if anything)

    • Forced sync from AnkiHub (AnkiHub → Sync Now)
    • Checked Tools → Check Media in Anki
    • Re-downloaded the deck from AnkiHub
  4. Screenshots

    • One screenshot of a problematic Image Occlusion card in the reviewer
    • One of the card’s note in the editor
    • If possible, the note on AnkiHub showing the image

Once you add that info, I can suggest concrete steps like:

  • How to verify if the media files are actually on your computer
  • How to re-associate Image Occlusion images with notes when using a private AnkiHub deck
  • Whether you might need to re-upload media to AnkiHub so other devices can download it

Go ahead and update your post with these details and I’ll walk through troubleshooting step by step.

Updated!

Thanks for the detailed update and for uploading the logs—that helps a lot.

Based on what you described, this looks like media that exists on AnkiHub (and in the FPOL deck) but is missing from your local Anki media folder, while the AnkiHub media sync thinks everything is already in sync (“Idle”).

Because this is a private deck with local edits, we want to avoid anything that would:

  • Unsubscribe you from the deck, or
  • Reset your notes to the AnkiHub version.

Below are safe steps you can take now, plus what the AnkiHub team will likely need to check on their side.

1. Confirm the files are truly missing locally (safe check)

  1. In Anki desktop, go to:
    Tools → Check Media
    • Confirm that 015b5f97ba5640968f198f5044b54e69-ao-1-A.svg (or similar -A.svg / -O.svg files) shows up in the “Missing files” section.
  2. Open your media folder:
    • Tools → Open Media Folder
    • Search for 015b5f97ba5640968f198f5044b54e69 in Finder (macOS) in that folder.
    • If you only see the base image and maybe some -Q.svg (question) files but no -A.svg / -O.svg, then the mask files are indeed not on disk.

This just confirms it’s not a display issue.

2. Force AnkiHub to re-check media for the FPOL deck

This should not affect your local edits to fields or scheduling.

  1. In Anki desktop, click AnkiHub → Manage Decks.
  2. Find FPOL in the list.
  3. Click the three dots (…) next to it and, if available in your version:
    • Use “Re-download media” or “Fix media for this deck” (wording may vary by version).
  4. After that, click AnkiHub → Sync Now and let it fully finish.

If your add-on version does not show a specific “re-download media” button for the deck, skip to the next step and we’ll rely on support.

3. Avoid these actions for now

Because FPOL is private and you have local edits:

  • Do not unsubscribe / resubscribe to FPOL.
  • Do not “Reset local changes” for the entire deck.
  • Do not delete unused media until this is resolved, as this could remove other needed files.

Those can all be safe in some situations, but in your case they risk either losing deck access or wiping local edits.

4. Why AnkiHub might show “Media Sync: Idle”

From what you describe, a likely scenario is:

  • The FPOL deck on AnkiHub does have the SVG mask files (as you see on the web).
  • Your local Anki is missing some of those files.
  • For some reason, AnkiHub’s media index currently believes your client already has them, so it doesn’t send them again and stays “Idle”.

Resolving this usually requires:

  • A server-side media rescan/rebuild for that deck, or
  • Resetting your AnkiHub media state for your account so your client re-downloads missing files.

Those steps require AnkiHub staff access, so this is something the team will need to look at using your uploaded log:

5. Next steps / what I suggest you do in the topic

Since you’ve already:

  • Provided your versions
  • Confirmed specific missing SVG filenames
  • Shown that the masks render correctly on AnkiHub web
  • Uploaded the debug ZIP

I recommend adding one more short reply (if you haven’t yet) with:

  • Confirmation from Tools → Check Media that these SVGs are listed as missing.
  • Whether AnkiHub → Manage Decks → FPOL → … shows any media-related options and what happened when you tried them (if you did).

Then this is ready for an AnkiHub team member to:

  1. Inspect the FPOL media state for your account.
  2. Trigger a media state reset / resync for you (or globally for that deck, if needed).
  3. Confirm whether a client update/workaround is needed for Image Occlusion SVGs.

If you’d like, you can paste here (or in that topic) a short list of 3–5 missing SVG filenames from Tools → Check Media. That makes it easier for staff to search the FPOL media store for them specifically.

Thanks. I can confirm that Tools → Check Media lists the affected -A.svg / -O.svg files as missing locally.

I also checked AnkiHub → Deck Management → FPOL, and my version does not show a “Re-download media” or “Fix media for this deck” option, so I have not taken any further action.

Since the same masks render correctly on AnkiHub web and Media Sync remains Idle, I’ll wait for a team member to inspect the uploaded logs/media state. I have not unsubscribed, reset the whole deck, or deleted unused media.

Thanks for confirming all that and for being careful with the private deck and your local edits—that’s exactly right for now.

Based on what you’ve done and the fact that:

  • The -A.svg / -O.svg files are listed as missing in Tools → Check Media
  • The same masks display correctly on AnkiHub web
  • Media Sync stays “Idle”
  • Your AnkiHub add-on version doesn’t expose any per‑deck “re-download media” option

this is almost certainly an issue with how AnkiHub’s media state is tracked for your account (or for that FPOL deck), rather than anything you can fix safely from the client side.

At this point, the right move is exactly what you said:

  • Do not unsubscribe from FPOL
  • Do not reset the deck or delete unused media
  • Wait for an AnkiHub team member to:
    • Inspect your debug file ankihub_addon_debug_info_rmeiselman_1787775439.zip
    • Check the FPOL media index for some of the missing filenames (e.g. 015b5f97ba5640968f198f5044b54e69-ao-1-A.svg)
    • Trigger a media-state reset / forced re-download on the server side if needed

To make it as easy as possible for staff when they pick this up, you’ve already done almost everything. The only extra thing that can help (if you haven’t added it yet) is:

  • Post a short list (3–5) of representative missing SVG filenames from Tools → Check Media in that topic.

Otherwise, you’re in a good holding pattern. A staff member will need to handle this on the backend; there’s no safe client-only way to force a full re-download of just those media files without risking your local FPOL edits.

Hi! Just following up on this since the issue is still unresolved and the affected Image Occlusion cards remain unusable. Debug logs are uploaded above. Thank you!

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Since the deck is private, it’s a bit harder to be of help since there isn’t general access to the to it. Just to tack the obvious: have you tried reaching out to the deck owners, or other users of the deck, to see if they have experienced similar issues?

It’s hard to draw much in the way of conclusions about ‘missing media’ as the way that this counter works means that virtually everyone has non-zero values there (even when not missing media). Downloading the deck myself I do see that some images appear to broken on my end as well, which is as likely as not to be something that only the deck owner would be able to fix

I’ll go ahead and tag one of our developers to take a look, though your best bet is almost certainly going to be to reach out to the deck owner and see if others have experienced similar issues, and/or if they can reupload the appropriate files or have other fixes in place

@rmeiselman Please try syncing again now. There was an issue with hundreds of files in the deck that should be fixed now.

Hi thank you guys! It’s hard to get ahold of the deck owner. I am still experiencing some image issues but perhaps everyone else is too?

My understanding is that anyone who would have downloaded the deck will be experiencing the same issue/s

You might also try resetting local changes (Resetting Local Changes) as well as unsubscribing and resubscribing to the deck

Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.

Oh wait! Its working now! I think @abdo.nh did something that fixed it. Thank you!
