School Tag Not Updating

Over the summer, my AnkiHub subscription lapsed, and in that interim, it seems like my school-specific tags did not sync or update on AnkiKing when I resubscribed/updated my payment. Upon opening anki this is what I see (the window) and below I have attached an image of what the tags should look like (broken down to week) and what mine looks like (very minimal tags).

Below is what I tried doing with chatGPT:

I am hoping you can help me troubleshoot an issue that began after renewing my AnkiHub subscription. Although my subscription is active again, the AnkiHub add-on crashes during startup, preventing authentication and synchronization. As a result, my TouroCOMHarlem optional tags are not updating, which is particularly concerning as my OMS-II curriculum begins this week.

Background

I am a Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine – Harlem student and use the AnKing Step Deck together with the TouroCOMHarlem Optional Tags to organize my curriculum.

My AnkiHub subscription lapsed briefly, but I renewed it today. On the AnkiHub website, my subscription is correctly listed as active, and I remain subscribed to the TouroCOMHarlem optional tag group.

However, immediately after renewing, the AnkiHub add-on began failing during startup before it reaches the login/synchronization stage.

Current Issue

Every time Anki launches, I receive the following message:

Add-on Startup Failed

The following add-on failed to load:

AnkiHub

Because the add-on never successfully initializes:

  • I am never prompted to log into AnkiHub.

  • My renewed subscription is never synchronized.

  • The TouroCOMHarlem optional tags are not updated.

  • AnkiHub appears to crash before any synchronization occurs.

TouroCOMHarlem Optional Tags

My biggest concern is maintaining access to the updated curriculum tags.

I still have the TouroCOMHarlem optional tags locally, so my collection and review history appear intact.

Currently my tag structure looks like:

AnkiHub_Optional
└── TouroCOMHarlem
    β”œβ”€β”€ FallYear1
    β”œβ”€β”€ SpringYear1
    β”œβ”€β”€ Summer_Step1
    └── Year2
         β”œβ”€β”€ BehavioralMedicine
         β”œβ”€β”€ Mod7
         └── Mod8

However, this appears to be an older version of the tag organization.

I have attached two screenshots:

  1. My current local tag hierarchy.

  2. The expected/current tag hierarchy that I should have after synchronization.

My understanding is that my local optional tags are stale because the AnkiHub add-on crashes before it can download the updated tag organization.

What I Have Already Tried

  • Confirmed my AnkiHub subscription is active.

  • Confirmed I am still subscribed to the TouroCOMHarlem optional tag group on the AnkiHub website.

  • Deleted and reinstalled the AnkiHub add-on.

  • Installed the current AnkiHub add-on again.

  • Restarted Anki multiple times.

  • Verified the add-on version is current.

  • Verified the bundled dependencies (including typing_extensions) are present.

Despite these steps, the same startup error occurs every time.

Questions

  1. Is this a known issue with the current AnkiHub release?

  2. Is the ParamSpec import error preventing the add-on from authenticating and synchronizing my subscription?

  3. Once the startup issue is resolved, should my existing TouroCOMHarlem optional tags automatically update to the current hierarchy, or will I need to manually refresh or resubscribe?

  4. Is there anything I should avoid doing (such as unsubscribing/resubscribing or forcing a sync) to preserve my existing collection and review history while this issue is being resolved?

Thank you very much for your help. My OMS-II curriculum begins this week, and I rely heavily on the TouroCOMHarlem optional tags to organize my coursework. My primary goal is to restore synchronization while preserving my current review history and receiving the updated tag organization.

Hello,

This startup error was introduced in the latest AnkiHub add-on update. The issue was fixed yesterday, so please click β€œCheck for Updates” and restart Anki. This issue should now be resolved.

After that, follow this tutorial to reset your optional tags: How to Reset Local Changes to an Optional Tag Group

Let me know if everything goes as expected!
