Shuffle feature button missing

Hey, so I just saw a previous help request at this link

The button they’ve referenced doesn’t show up on my new card/edit card window. I’ve tried updating my addons and updating the note type but it’s a no show. Any suggestions?

Reading: Anking Notetype Shuffle Feature

Thanks for the details and for linking that other topic.

That older thread is about the classic AnKing notetype shuffle feature, which was implemented in a previous version of the notetype. If the Shuffle button is missing in your Add / Edit window, it usually comes down to one of these:

  1. You’re on a different / newer notetype

    • The Shuffle button is specific to certain AnKing note types (and particular templates).
    • If you’ve switched to a newer official AnKing note type (e.g., via AnkiHub), some older front-end buttons/features may be:
      • Moved into a different UI location, or
      • Removed in newer template versions.
    • To confirm:
      1. Open a card that should have the shuffle button.
      2. In the editor, look at the top-right: note Note type name and version.
      3. Compare that with the note type referenced in the older topic (likely a previous AnKing version).
  2. Fields or template not matching the expected AnKing template

    • If your card has been customized, or you imported a deck that altered the template, the HTML/JS that draws the button may be gone.
    • Try:
      1. Go to Tools → Manage Note Types…
      2. Select your AnKing note type → Cards…
      3. Check if the templates look heavily edited or different from a fresh AnKing note type from AnkiHub.
  3. You’re not on the official AnKing note type from AnkiHub

    • Some community/shared versions don’t have that UI at all.
    • Make sure you’re subscribed to the official AnKing deck on AnkiHub and that:
      • The card is actually using the AnKing Overhaul (or your subscribed variant) note type.
      • You’ve allowed AnkiHub to update the note type.

What I’d suggest next

To narrow this down, could you please:

  1. Post a screenshot of your:

    • Add / Edit window for one of these cards (showing the toolbar area where the Shuffle button should be).
    • Note type information (screenshot of: Fields… and Cards… window title bar with the note type name).
  2. Tell us:

    • The exact name of the note type as shown in Anki.
    • Whether that note type is currently being managed by AnkiHub (subscribed deck, and if you see type/template updates listed in the AnkiHub add-on log).

With that info, we can check whether:

  • You’re on a newer template where the button was removed/changed, or
  • Your template is out-of-sync and needs to be restored from the official AnkiHub-managed version.

Image 1 shows my browser with the card and the edit window open. Image 2 shows the same card’s exact notetype

Thanks for the screenshots—that helps.

From what I can see:

  • You’re on an AnKing V12 note type (the current AnkiHub-managed one).
  • Your editor toolbar looks exactly like the standard V12 layout, and there’s no Shuffle button anywhere in the Add/Edit window for that card.

Putting that together with the older topic you linked:
the Shuffle button was part of an older AnKing note type/template and is not present in the current V12 template you’re using from AnkiHub. In other words, nothing is “broken” on your end—your note type simply doesn’t include that UI anymore.

What this means in practice

  • There isn’t a toggle or setting in AnkiHub that will make that old Shuffle button appear for the current official V12 note type.
  • To get that exact feature back, you’d have to:
    • Import / recreate an older AnKing note type that still has the shuffle JS/HTML in the template, and
    • Manually migrate notes to it or use it only for new notes.
This would not be recommended if you want to stay fully synced with the official AnkiHub note type, because:
    • AnkiHub will only update the official V12 type,
    • Custom/old note types won’t receive ongoing template fixes.

Workable alternatives

Depending on what you were planning to do with Shuffle:

  1. If you wanted to randomize cloze ordering / list order:

    • The current recommendation is usually to:
      • Use separate smaller clozes, or
      • Manually randomize when creating the note.
    • Some users also rely on Anki’s card scheduling rather than a per-note “shuffle” tool.
  2. If you really need a shuffle-like helper:

    • You could:
      • Duplicate a small set of notes into a separate, custom note type where you add your own “shuffle” helper (HTML/JS) to the template,
      • Keep your “main” AnKing cards on the official V12 note type for AnkiHub syncing and stability.
    • Just note: this would be outside the officially supported AnKing/AnkiHub setup.

If you can describe exactly what you were hoping to shuffle (e.g., clozes in a sentence, bullet points in a field, options in a list), I can suggest a workflow that works cleanly with the current AnkiHub-managed V12 setup.

I’d like a team member to confirm whether the feature was removed. The prior post is from not 5 months ago.

You’re right to question that—given how recent that other thread is, it’s reasonable to double‑check.

I don’t see any current AnkiHub/AnKing V12 documentation or support threads that clearly state “the Shuffle button was removed in V12,” so I can’t definitively confirm that change myself.

Because of that, the best next step is:

  • I’ll explicitly flag this for an AnKing/AnkiHub team member to:
    • Confirm whether the Shuffle feature was intentionally removed in the current AnKing V12 note type, or
    • Let us know if it should still exist and you’ve run into a bug / misconfiguration.

In the meantime, from your screenshots we can say:

  • You’re on the official AnKing V12 note type (AnkiHub‑managed).
  • The UI you see (without Shuffle) matches what other V12 users generally report.
  • So it’s very unlikely this is a local problem like a broken add‑on or corrupted template.

Let’s wait on an official confirmation from the team about whether that feature is deprecated in V12 or if there’s a plan to re‑introduce it.

Hello,

  1. Download this add-on: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/952691989
  2. After the add-on is installed, please restart Anki.
  3. On your Anki main screen, navigate to AnKing > AnKing Note Types.
  4. In the window that appears, first click the option to Reset the notetype, and then click to Update notetypes. Be sure to save your changes.

tl;dr I followed your instructions, didn’t work

The addon I’d already installed last year.

Tried resetting the note type under the general tab.

Had updated the note types yesterday and had the button grayed out just like on the photo you’ve sent.

Tried restarting anki a few times

No change

@fleecesnatcher The button actually comes from the Wrapper meta-addon add-on. Once you install that, it should show up by default. If you perhaps have the add-on installed but the button is not showing, go to Tools > Add-ons > Config and confirm that "visible": true is set under the shuffle section.
