I read “The symptoms of depression or the unpredictability caused by frequent alternation between periods of depression and hypomania causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.” for bipolar II disorder. This is not referring to the marked impairment found in a true manic episode.
