View Suggestion on AnkiHub

Change {{c1::protein synthesis}} to {{c3::protein synthesis}}.
Add cloze around “mRNA”

@andrew I agree w/ this suggestion - it offers greater detail that is needed, relevant, & accurate; would also be beneficial to change {{c4::protein synthesis}} to {{c3::protein synthesis}} so that the cloze deletion shows it in unison with “mRNA”

This suggestion will add 1-2 extra clozes to the deck. When doing this, all cards in the deck must be checked to see if this material is directly/indirectly covered elsewhere.

If it is covered → reject

If it is not covered → you have to weigh the benefit of adding entirely new 1-2 clozes for everyone subscribing/subscribed to the deck vs the benefit of not adding it.

  1. Does everyone need this cloze?
  2. Will this make someone score higher (directly or indirectly?)
  3. Can this just be added to the extra?

This is not specifically for this cloze per se, but this is just a screening method I tend to use when handling new clozes that users suggest.

In 90-95% of cases, they are rejected because they are just simply not needed or can just be added to the extra.

Another reason is okay fair the clozes are good but its not needed for all subscribers of the deck. Which is when I would use this

“You can add this yourself by right-clicking on the card → go to AnkiHub protect fields → select the field you want to protect → add it yourself and it won’t be overwritten”

If this is not covered anywhere else and everyone would benefit from having it added to the text, then Im okay with it.

In this case, for new clozes, you’d want at least 3 or more maintainers to agree (the more the merrier) to reduce any last second mistakes and make sure this is something that will generally improve the deck

I would argue the more factual and nuanced card facilitates a better understanding of translation and the central dogma. It could be simplified to fewer cloze’s. But simply saying the rough ER is what does translation is overly simplified to what the MCAT is expecting. The card could also be changed something along the lines of “The rough ER is the organelle where protein translation takes place.” This avoids the inaccurate oversimplification in the original card that says the rough ER makes proteins, it doesn’t. Ribosomes make the proteins.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but there are also free floating ribosomes, not associated with the rough ER, that facilitate translation.

Good point @Parker . Looking at how this card fits into the rest of the deck, the purpose behind it seems more so to explain the rough ER’s purpose. There is a corresponding note (nid: 1553961912196) for smooth ER, which is how I came to that conclusion. With that in consdieration, I’m thinking we could either have this card as:

  1. The {{c1::rough::smooth or rough}} ER contains {{c2::ribosomes}}, where {{c3::mRNA}} attaches to enable {{c3::protein synthesis}}
    OR
  2. The {{c1::rough::smooth or rough}} ER is the organelle where {{c2::protein translation}} takes place

What are your thoughts @Ahmed7 ?

#2 is a really nice complement to nid: 1553961912196

But also #1 takes it a step further and is more specific.

I think you can go with what will be the most beneficial, either 1 or 2, I like them both!

I think they’re basically the same with #1 just breaking down what “protein translation” is so that we have 3 total clozes; I personally think that break down is helpful; @Parker or @Amelia.Geist if you have additions/suggestions about this, feel free to let us know. For now, I’ll go with option 1 from my earlier reply

I prefer the more specific #1.
