Here is how i think about it. beta 2 agonists stimulate insulin secretion. insulin causes K+ to go into cells. alpha antagonists block alpha-2, which is sympatholytic (net result is increased sympathetics, including beta 2). so antagonizing alpha 2 can have a similar effect to agonizing beta 2.
