@alexlewis curious on your take on these sorts of cards. Does this meet the definition of the MIP?

@stapedius yeah this violates MIP for sure. This needs a mnemonic at worst. This kind of content is hard with Anki.

Just thinking about this kind of content, is being able to rattle off a list of clinical features really something that is expected? The reverse direction may be valid for each of these. Like “what personality disorder has unstable self image as a dominant feature”. For the sake of examination I have been tested more on recognising rather than recalling

@braviboron I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this

@alexlewis @Stapedius I think those are fair criticisms and I made the card lazily just by copying. I do think there is some yield to having both sides i.e. What personality disorder is characterised by x? and What are the features of X?

I do think that it’s a bit easy to just see the bolded clinical sign/symptom and rote learn the card, forgetting about other clinical symptoms that aren’t quite as classic. But I certainly take your point about the MIP. Not sure how best to test people’s knowledge in both directions.

@braviboron I’ve accidentally discovered a new card creation concept I’ve called “minimum contrast”, where the stem of lots of different cards is almost identical except for a single word or phrase. Just to avoid memorising the stem, but being able to only see the bit that is different. So you’re right, if only the BPD cards were written this way it would be super easy, but if there is a whole set of personality disorder cards it is no longer possible to memorise this way

Just as an aside, being able to see “unstable sense of self” and automatically think BPD is not a bad thing.

Can you send me an example or a few NIDs to see exactly what you mean @alexlewis, but that sounds great. You’re absolutely right that the buzzwords are important to learn too. I do think that a slightly harder card ought to be included too @Stapedius for the learners that really want to remember the clinical signs. If we accept this batch of cards, I will simplify the language to make them a bit less busy. If Alex can show me what he means about the Min Contrast, I will make some cards/edit these cards for the reverse too.

@braviboron Idk if this is an example that @alexlewis intended but I’ve found nid:1742289508402 and a few related cards for febrile seizures to work this way for me. You’ll find them under the febrile seizures tag and they’re all similar to this nid.
