Would it be “Sedatives” instead of “Sedative”
@Ahmed7 We good to push given the 6 likes on my last post plus me for a total of 7? Or do we need to wait for more given we’re removing a cloze?
I prefer the original as it helps me link alcohol with benzos and barbiturates (as they share the same receptor and many other features). This link helps me in many questions and also to understand how alcohol withdrawal works
The suggested change will put alcohol under a bigger umbrella, which is not wrong but the card will lose more than it’ll gain. Also I feel like the risk of sedative withdrawal is well covered in other cards in the deck (nid:1485313553170, nid:1484778229455, nid:1484768605345) and no real additional value will be added to what’s already there
I am voting on keeping the card as is and maybe remove the “drug” hint from alcohol
Valid points @mohannadkh10 . I’m at a standstill because the original is very effective, it helped drill which drugs cause life threatening withdrawal for me (but I hate how its formatted)
@Jwill maybe we can bring this to slack?
I’m now also starting to lean towards keeping the card as is. In hindsight, I’m not sure the card really needs to change. The main reasons given for this change were 1. to avoid confusion caused by referring to alcohol as a drug, and 2. to combine these into one term since alcohol is a sedative; However:
- Alcohol is a drug, and although it may cause momentary confusion when first doing this card, keeping the hint can help educate/reinforce for us future doctors that alcohol is a drug, albeit a very popular and more socially acceptable one.
- Combining these terms may also create confusion. True, alcohol is sedative in the strict sense of the word (CNS depressant), but it also has stimulant properties at lower doses, and is often referred to as a singular entity, rather than as a member of a drug class such as sedatives or stimulants. It may not be necessary to combine sedatives and alcohol under one umbrella term.
I think we can just let it be for now I guess, I’m not sure of another way at the moment
