Fixed it!

Indifferent since I often see it referred to by either term. Would be nice to have consistency throughout deck though. Anyone know which term UW uses?

To clarify, I believe in most clinical contexts, it’s referred to simply as “21-hydroxylase” deficiency. If you google “21β-hydroxylase deficiency,” you’ll see mostly “21-hydroxylase deficiency” (i.e. research publications about CAH, Wikipedia, Medline plus, etc.) since that is the name of the enzyme. The term “21β-hydroxylase” is used descriptively to emphasize its specific beta-hydroxylation activity on the 21st carbon of the steroid precursors, but this is not the enzyme’s official name. (The official official name in biochemical/genetic contexts is CYP21A2, or “steroid 21-hydroxylase”)

AMBOSS uses both but I feel like I see it more often with the β. FA24 always omits the β, stating simply “21-hydroxylase”.

I can make a bulk suggestion and change it all to just 21-hydroxylase, and from then on we stick to just 21?

One thing to keep in mind is that in all the steroid pathway diagrams in Extra, it’s shown as “21β-hydroxylase”, which could cause confusion. For that reason I’m honestly not sure if changing to 21-hydroxylase would be the best idea even though it’s technically more correct. I’m also curious to know how UWorld terms it. Anyone with UWorld able to find out?

I think we should go with whatever UWorld or the NBME uses, we can update the cards and the illustrations to match whatever we decide

UW QID:222 “21-hydroxylase deficiency” w/ no beta symbol.

The issue is with Ahmed Afif’s and Mujeeb’s new pictures both showing 21β

If they are the same thing, we can just switch to β so we don’t keep gettign suggestions on this. Just trying to think of what method will stop these suggestions for the future

Or we can also add a note that 21-hydroxylase is interchangeable with 21β-hydroxylase

I think we should update the cards and images to “21-”
I’ll update my image, once we decide which one we’re going with

We could add a note too, to stave off further suggestions:

UW uses “21-”, but other resources (Amboss) use “21β-”

@AhmedAfifi would you be able to change it to “21-hydroxylase”. Also a good chance to reduce the resolution since a few cards with this image causes lag for me. I think it’s the only one that does so far

@Ahmed7 Sure! I’ll work on it.

Any update on this @Ahmed7 and @AhmedAfifi? Should I take it to Slack first?

Yes slack would be good

Will get to this in a few hours
