@mr.kaiser thank you for the suggestion. Correct me if I’m wrong, but if memory serves sensory register is not considered a form of working memory (rather, it is sensory memory, which is distinct).
In either case, for all content-related suggestions we ask/require that a source citation be included for consideration.
You are right, thank you for catching that. They are components of Sensory memory.
“Sensory memory can be divided into subsystems called the sensory registers: iconic, echoic, haptic, olfactory, and gustatory.”
Would you agree with the following:
The sensory registers are components of Sensory memory that includes {{c1::iconic}}, {{c1::echoic}}, {{c1::haptic}}, {{c1::olfactory}}, and {{c1::gustatory}}.
@mr.kaiser I think we can clean it up for sure. Arguably the original card isn’t exactly artful in its phrasing
So the first thing I’ll point out is that, for various reasons, in almost all cases we have to lean on MCAT-primary sources (Khan, Kaplan, AAMC, UWorld). This is to ensure that the level of detail, and information, is appropriate for the exam.
That being said, of the big 3:
Each mentions sensory memory but only references echoic and iconic. Given that the others aren’t seemingly mentioned in any primary sources I’m reticent to include them without further support.
What I’m thinking atm:
- The sensory register is a form of memory that includes {{c1::iconic}} and {{c1::echoic}} memory.
It’s a little debatable if ‘sensory register’ is redundant here, but the term is used by KA so seems harmless to leave it in in the event that it’s useful or relevant to AAMC material.
What about this:
The sensory registers are components of sensory memory that most notably includes {{c1::iconic}}, and {{c1::echoic}} memory.
I think the sensory memory part is important for noting it is its own thing: Not Short-term, not working but it’s up to you to decide.
Yeah, I think that works. The only quibble I’ll make is that I’m pretty sure ‘sensory register’ is supposed to be singular.
But otherwise I think it’s certainly an improvement from where we started.
- The sensory register is a component of sensory memory that most notably includes {{c1::iconic}}, and {{c1::echoic}} memory.
If we like that I think we’re sitting pretty.
That sits pretty happy with me
Cool.
If you want to edit the suggestion to accommodate these changes I think we’re a go.
All good, the website takes some getting used to. I think we’re good.
I’ll leave it open for a bit for other maintainers to take a look but unless there’s any roadblocks anyone notices I imagine it’ll go through before too long.
