View Suggestion on AnkiHub

@Michael_B, hmm. I could go either way on this. Having both blocked out in a single cloze might also make the card overly obtuse. I will defer to your thoughts.

The rationale behind my suggestion is that there are only two principles in Freudian psychoanalysis, so if you know one, you already know the other. Given the presence of the “reality of the external world” verbiage, I think it shouldn’t be too obtuse.

I’ll still maintain that I think blocking both out under the same cloze puts the card at too much of a remove. Separate clozes I can see, but having both blanked out strikes me as being too confined.

Granted, having one on the card does give some inference as to the other but that is the nature of a lot of things and in this case I’m of the mind that blanking both out is too much. I can see a compromise in something like leaving the world ‘principle’ out of the cloze in order to offer some context clue there.

I agree about moving “principle” out of the cloze or at least making it visible. The pleasure principle card (1561654042676) already uses {{c1::pleasure principle::… principle}}, so modifying this one would make them more uniform. Also, that card doesn’t mention the reality principle, so maybe we could remove the pleasure principle from this card? Let me know what you think.

My instinct is that keeping the word ‘principle’ out of the cloze is a nice middle ground that allows for both to be under the same cloze without a dead giveaway that makes the card too easy to reason/guess. Seems like a reasonable compromise that allows for the most utility while still masking the words pleasure and reality.

For the moment I’ll leave the suggestion as-is and wait for the lead deck maintainer to check in so as to gauge his thoughts and we’ll go from there but for my own part I like the idea.

I definitely agree with y’all! I didn’t even think to take out “principle” from the cloze when I first read through the suggestion. Just goes to show how helpful it is to have some discussion on the topic! I’ve edited the suggested to write {c1::pleasure principle::… principle}}
