my gut felt it was closer to thyroid storm than it was hyperthyroidism. Wikipedia states hyperthyroidism is a subgroup of thyrotoxicosis (though sometimes used interchangeably) and thyroid storm is severe thyrotoxicosis. Medscape refers to it as thyrotoxic crisis (as does dynamed), which is perhaps what the original author was getting at? My vote would be for changing the bracketing to ‘thyrotoxic crisis’.
