Goal, Purpose, & Deck Breakdown
The AnKing ABIM Deck is a comprehensive, high-yield Anki deck designed specifically for internal medicine clinicians preparing for the ABIM Certification Exam. It focuses on clinical decision-making, guideline-based management, and high-yield algorithms. and pathways.
This deck is fully collaborative via AnkiHub, allowing contributors to continuously update, revise, and expand content to reflect evolving guidelines and the latest evidence.
Note: This deck is not for Step 3 preparation. For Step 3, please use the AnKing Step deck!
2.
Deck Sources and References
To ensure the AnKing ABIM Deck is high-yield, accurate, and guideline-based, sources are stratified as below:
Primary Sources (Core Content)
The following are the most important and preferred sources. Cards are supported by at least one of these resources:
- MKSAP (Medical Knowledge Self-Assessment Program®) – Comprehensive internal medicine board preparation created by the American College of Physicians and widely used for ABIM preparation.
- UWorld ABIM – High-yield board-style questions emphasizing clinical reasoning and exam-relevant management decisions.
- AMBOSS Knowledge+ Internal Medicine Board Review – Evidence-based summaries, clinical frameworks, and guideline-focused explanations; formerly known as NEJM Knowledge+ Specialty Board Review
Secondary Sources (Supplementary Content)
The following resources are used for additional explanation, clarification, or expansion, but any information added from them must be supported by at least one of the primary sources listed above:
- UpToDate
- USPSTF guidelines
- Society guidelines
- PubMed / landmark trials / meta-analyses (linked in Additional Resources field)
- Other verified cards already in the deck (reference specific NID numbers when applicable)
These sources help provide context, guideline details, or deeper explanation, but do not serve as the sole basis for a new card
Sources Not Accepted
To maintain accuracy and exam relevance, the following sources are not being used:
- Random internet articles
- Wikipedia
- Standard textbooks
- School lecture notes
All cards cite primary sources to ensure high reliability and alignment with ABIM exam content
3.
Card Structure and Tags
The AnKing ABIM Deck is question-based and guideline-driven, with a focus on ABIM-style content.
Card Fields
- Text: the core card content witht he cloze
- Extra: any foundational/background knowledge, nuance, pathophysiology depth
- Summary Illustrations: algorithm-style illustrations only
- Additional Resources: landmark trial references, PubMed links, study citations, etc
- Missed Questions: for user’s Q-banks screenshots/convenience
Tagging Structure
Every card has:
- ABIM Blueprint tag: mapped exactly to the official blueprint hierarchy (system → subtopic, e.g. Cardiovascular → Heart Failure)
- UWorld QID tag
- MKSAP QID tag
- Amboss QID tag
Additional notes on tagging:
- Go all the way down to subtopic level (e.g. Anaphylaxis → Serum Sickness) — even if only one card falls under a tag, it’s still worth having for navigation
- If a question maps to multiple systems (e.g. hypertension under both Cardiology and Nephrology), cards are tagged under both
- No sub-decks, as tags serve as the navigation system

Deck Formatting Guidelines

5.1) Adding images
We are committed to respecting the intellectual property rights of others. To that end, the media in the deck will include only those images that are made in-house, or that we have licensed or reasonably believe are in the public domain.
These decks are intended to be used with your purchase of any resource used in them. We take no responsibility for your use of any materials or images that are not legally obtained and strongly encourage you purchase all the materials associated with the deck you use.
What Licenses Can I Use?
- If you are adding a new image, please only use an image with a creative commons license or is in the public domain
Accepted licenses: CC BY, CC BY-SA, CC BY-ND
Non-acceptable licenses: CC-NC, CC BY-NC
If you are creating your own illustration/diagram, please first reach out to us.
Image Suggestion Checklist
Please ensure the following when adding an image from the Web, or your suggestion will be rejected:
- The image is added to the extra or text and nowhere else
- The font size is 10
- The citation is italicized
- Image is in JPEG/JPG format ideally
- Image is resized to an acceptable size (its should be around 500 px - 900 px in width, the maximum width size should not exceed 1500px.)
- Image is public domain/ has a creative common license that does not contain “NC” or “Non-Commercial”
- Image is cited properly like how other cards are in the deck, in general follow this format → Photo credit: Author name (hyperlinked to website), Creative Commons/Public Domain Hyperlink, via website/journal name
- Please ensure the image does NOT exceed 1mb. Ideally it is under 500 kb
Citation formatting should look like this:
5.2) Period formatting
No cards in the deck end in periods, and most free sentences do not (unless it is a block of text explanation that requires multiple sentences in extra)
5.3) Capitalizations
- Please maintain consistent capitalization. Example: I am a Deck Maintainer → should be → I am a deck maintainer. Capitals are only for names and the start of sentences
Capitalization in extra
- Please capitalize the first letter of each sentence in the extra section
5.4) Bolding, Underlining, & Italics
- Bolding and such should be used to draw your eyes. Our eyes go to bold first, then underline, then italics.
- It is best to tend to bold only the main subject and underline or italicize other important details.
- Italics can easily go unnoticed, particularly if you don’t use custom coloring.
- Use underlining sparingly!
5.5) Dashes in Extra
Whenever there are TWO or more sentences in the extra section. Add a dash at the start of the example, instead of:
- The heart is a pump
- The heart is approximately 300 grams
It should be:
-
- The heart is a pump
-
- The heart is approximately 300 grams
5.6) One-by-one cards
Feel free to submit suggestions to make cards one-by-one, however, please reference these guidelines:
- The cards need to be able to be recalled in order - this means that there needs to be a mnemonic or a sequence of treatment
- The 5 P’s of pheochromocytoma can NOT be one-by-one because they all start with P and it will be impossible to do “ordered recall”
- One by one notes should not be done for cards that have 2-3 clozes, unless they are mnemonics
Please user the wrapper meta-addon to apply the “mnemonics” styling to the 1by1 card so they can be left-justified

Deck Suggestion Guidelines
Read This Before Suggesting
- If your suggestions do not contain enough rationale and/or specific evidence, they will be automatically rejected.
- We also reserve the right to not provide an explanation if we deem your suggestion violates our guidelines found on this page.
- By submitting a suggestion, you agree to adhere to these rules and follow them stringently, and you acknowledge that failure to follow these rules will result in automatic rejection.
6.1) Rule #1 – Always Cite an Acceptable Source
Every suggestion must include a specific source. A QID alone is not enough, it should be paired with the relevant quotation or explanation (see Rule #2).
Acceptable sources:
- UWorld Internal Medicine QID (e.g.,
29983) + direct quotation or explanation - AMBOSS QID (e.g.,
4J03qh) + direct quotation or explanation - MKSAP QID (e.g.,
givdx24904) + direct quotation or explanation - Society guidelines with a working link (ACP, USPSTF, ACC/AHA, IDSA, ADA, KDIGO, GOLD, etc.)
- Other cards in this deck (cite specific nid #)
Not acceptable:
- Step-only / preclinical resources (First Aid, Pathoma, Sketchy, Boards & Beyond)
- Wikipedia, random articles, textbooks, school lectures
- UpToDate as a standalone source requires corroboration from UWorld, AMBOSS, or MKSAP. Our goal is to help learners test better and score better, and we will defer to board resources over clinical practice guidelines when there is a discrepancy.
Note: Do not copy/paste verbatim into the Text/Extra sections. Verbatim copying is highly discouraged and will result in automatic rejection with the possibility of no explanation.
6.2) Rule #2 – Provide a Sufficient Rationale
- Your rationale should explain why this specific change should be added and/or why it would benefit all users of this deck.
- If you believe this change benefits you, your next question should be: “Will the majority of users want this change? Is it useful to them, or is it only useful to me?”
- Aim to give as much supporting information as possible (quotations, sources, explanations).
- Make a strong case and avoid ambiguous statements.
- 1–3 word rationales are generally NOT accepted.
- Be thorough; the longer and more detailed the rationale, the better.
- If no rationale is provided, or the one provided is insufficient, your suggestion will be automatically rejected (with OR without explanation).
- We typically require evidence of a UWorld / AMBOSS / MKSAP question directly testing the concept in order to change cloze content. A resource merely mentioning a fact is not sufficient grounds to change a cloze. Changes to the Extra field have more leeway.
