The Amboss hover-over to define addon just spontaneously appeared on my Anki. I have never installed it before, nor have I ever used Amboss. My guess is that the AnkiHub addon probably added a script for it somehow to the private deck I am using, since it is now uploaded to AnkiHub. How can I remove it? It’s incredibly distracting, not to mention useless since I don’t use Amboss. Thanks.
Hello,
You can remove the AMBOSS addon by going to tools → addons → click on “AMBOSS add-on” → on the bottom right click delete
Also, AnkiHub has no ability to install other addons for you so this was not the reason why that addon was installed
If you have the timer addon from AnKing VIP or something it adds the amboss logo for some reason. Maybe this should be fixed.
@AnKingMed any ideas?
@spartandrew18 what timer addon? The study timer? It shouldn’t add the AMBOSS thing in the top right unless you have the AMBOSS addon
@odinsage can you share one of your notes? We probably just need to remove something in the note styling. You could search “AMBOSS” in the front and back template of the note styling and you may find it. @glutanimate may be able to offer some help
Yes, as @TheAnking mentioned, this will likely come down to removing a small AMBOSS script from your card templates. If you are collaborating with someone else on the deck, it likely got added because they have the AMBOSS add-on installed and the changes got synced to AnkiHub.
You could try to find the snippet manually (it should be a single script
line mentioning AMBOSS towards the end of the front and back templates of the note type), or you could install the AMBOSS add-on once and toggle mobile support on and off. That should also take care of removing the snippet.
If you run into any trouble with this, I would recommend reaching out to AMBOSS support. They’re super responsive and should be able to provide further assistance.
It went away for a while after I restarted Anki. It just came back while I was reviewing a card in the Atlas of Auscultation deck from Ankihub. Surprisingly, the front, back, and styling section of this card did not contain the word “Amboss” anywhere. After reviewing that card, all the cards after it have the annoying Amboss underlined hyperlinks. Restarting Anki fixed the problem again.
EDIT: The same problem occurred again after doing a new card from the Blue Opthamology deck from Ankihub.
I have never downloaded, installed, or used the Amboss addon.
It sounds like, if I want a permanent fix, I should try downloading the Amboss addon and disabling this with that, or I could ask the authors of Atlas of Auscultation, Blue Opthamology, and any other implicated decks to remove the Amboss script, or I could ask Amboss support for help.
EDIT: I tried installing the Amboss add on. It’s added a giant Amboss logo to my Anki and an Amboss button on the menu bar. Branding my whole Anki with a company whose resources I don’t use is not an acceptable solution to me, whether it works or not.
I don’t suppose someone on support could ask deck authors to remove Amboss scripts so that the Amboss script doesn’t infect non-Amboss devotees’ Ankis?
Thanks for giving the solution a spin!
To maybe explain what I think is happening: If you’re using the AMBOSS add-on and enable mobile support, the add-on will append a small snippet to your card templates to make the hover explanations work on mobile. This snippet is automatically removed when uninstalling or disabling the add-on, and it’s also removed when exporting decks from Anki. However, it appears like this might not be the case when sharing decks via AnkiHub. I’ve made a note to look into whether we can address this on AMBOSS’ side (very much appreciate your bringing this to our attention @TheAnKing!)
Until there is a definitive fix, would you mind giving the following a try, @odinsage? Walking through this locally, it seems to work for me to remove the snippet and corresponding highlighted terms from the Blue Ophthalmology deck:
- Start by syncing with AnkiHub to make sure your decks are up-to-date.
- Reinstall the AMBOSS add-on (please bear with me for a second, we will be uninstalling it right after). Then restart Anki.
- When Anki launches, dismiss the AMBOSS login dialog and then uninstall the add-on straight away from Tools → Add-ons.
- Restart Anki.
If everything went well, the highlighted terms should be gone now.
Thanks, glutaminate. I never came back because the problem went away after uninstalled the Amboss addon. I see from your post now that that’s what you suggested. It did work. Thanks.
