Lesson 9 - The Day 1 Checklist, settings, and beyond
A few things left to check off… in this lesson we’ll give you the best Anki settings (just copy them so you don’t have to worry!), and we’ll give you a checklist for today and for tomorrow so its easier to figure out what to do next.
What are the best settings to use?
Anki settings can be as easy or complicated as you want them to be. We’ve curated an essential set of settings that we recommend you use.
We highly recommend you turn on the FSRS button, this is Anki’s new spaced repetition algorithm, which is much more effective than the older default one (SM-2)
Note: Anki settings are not set in stone. What works for you may be different from what works for us, therefore, we recommend you experiment with different settings down the road. For now, getting started and staying consistent is the most important step.
If you want an in-depth explanation of each setting, check out the Ultimate Anki settings video made by the AnKing himself
Reviews on the first day
For your first day, complete the new cards you have unsuspended. We recommend doing at least 100 new cards, nothing less and nothing more. Slow and steady wins the race, and overwhelming yourself at the start is a surefire way to burn out and quit.
Remember to read each card carefully, and use the extra section to help you understand mechanisms or connect images to concepts. If you got the card wrong, hit again, if you got it wrong, hit good. Don’t overthink it.
After you’ve completed reviewing your first set of new cards, you can prepare for the next day.
A to-do list for tomorrow and beyond
The next morning, you’ll want to review the cards you did yesterday.
After that, you’ll want to repeat the cycle of Learn → Remember → Apply, by learning new material, unsuspending more new cards, doing them, and so on and so forth
The basics are covered, now it’s time to set you up so you can succeed in the first 6 months of medical school and how to prepare for Step 1 (and most importantly… PASS IT!)
