Lesson - The first 6 months of medical school and how to prepare for Step 1 (& PASS)
The first section of medical school is generally more difficult to find relevant flashcards in this deck because you go over foundational concepts like anatomy and histology. Oftentimes it is best to just search for individual topics using the Browser search bar in Anki.
For anatomy and histology, you can either make your own flashcards using the Image Occlusion add-on, ask upperclassmen for decks theyβve used for those courses, or try some of the shared decks on r/medicalschoolanki and AnkiHub
System blocks
Once you start system blocks (Cardiology, Immunology, Pathology, etc.), things are much easier! Use the tags to sort by systems or resources. We recommend the #FirstAid tag, even if you are not using the textbook, it is one of the most comprehensive tags in the Step deck.
High-yield tags
The High Yield tag (tag:#AK_Step1_v12::#Low/HighYield) is a widely used tag in the AnKing Step Deck that highlights the most essential cards. Itβs especially helpful for students with limited time or those who prefer to spend more of their study schedule doing practice questions rather than reviewing large numbers of cards.

How to prepare for Step 1
Although long, this video will show you how the AnKing studied to succeed on Step 1!
Even though Step 1 is pass or fail, now a strong foundation is the key to doing well on Step 2/3! Set some time to watch this video!
School-specific Optional tag groups
Optional tags are tags on a deck that not every subscriber has but that you can choose to subscribe to.
For example many schools have tagged the deck to go along with didactics.
Note! Your school might already have one made for you! Hereβs how to get them
- Go to Sign In
- Click on the 3 ddots on the top right hand side
- Click on Manage Optional Tags
- Select the tags that are pertinent to your school/institution
- Click Save
- Go to Anki and click Sync, you will then receive those new tags!
