Anki Servers - For University

I wish to sync with Ankihub within University; however, they have gone through a massive lockdown on ports, and now syncing and using the AI portion, along with AMBOSS, no longer works.

My intent is to get the specific servers and ports that are used for syncing, so I can then give it to them and hopefully get them to audit it and allow the connection. Is this possible or will it just be an aspect of only using it at home?

Note:

VPN are a no-go on the Uni’s WiFi

Mobile Hotspot often takes too long based on the sheer amount of concrete so sync and features stall

I’ll help you with information about AnkiHub sync requirements for your university network. Let me search for the specific server and port information you need.

Hi Rerpump,

I understand your challenge with accessing AnkiHub at your university due to their network restrictions. To help you get the specific servers and ports information to share with your university’s IT department, I’ll provide what information is available.

AnkiHub and Anki Syncing Requirements

For AnkiHub to work properly, your device needs to be able to make outbound HTTPS connections to:

  1. AnkiWeb servers (for basic Anki syncing):

  2. AnkiHub servers:

These connections typically use standard HTTPS (port 443).

Recommendation for University IT

When talking to your university IT department, request that they:

  1. Allow outbound HTTPS connections (port 443) to:

    • *.ankiweb.net (wildcard to cover all subdomains)
    • *.ankihub.net (wildcard to cover all subdomains)
  2. If they need more specific information, explain that these are educational tools used for medical/university studies that require secure synchronization of study materials.

If your university requires more specific technical details about the AnkiHub infrastructure, you might want to contact the AnkiHub team directly through their support channels for the most up-to-date information.

Would you like me to provide any additional information about working with AnkiHub in restricted network environments?

In addition to the websites mentioned by the AnkiHub bot, the add-on also needs to access https://ankihub.s3.amazonaws.com for media syncing, and sentry.io (should allow subdomains) for error reporting.

So the university came back, which is good however, they asked to clarify what port 3478 TCP is used for in Anki. Would I need to go through the other channels to find out?

Only standard HTTPS port (443) is used for all network traffic.

Would there then be any reason why the features wouldn’t work if outbound ports for HTTPS port 443 aren’t blocked?

Are you getting any error despite the port not being blocked? Can you post the error text?

It’s always a network connection error
