Network Error On Sync AnKing

I seem to keep getting the following error on syncing my anki deck. I recently downloaded AnKing v12, upgrading from the free v11. I’m not sure what’s causing this error. My WiFi is functional, so I’m assuming this isn’t an issue with my WiFi.

This error is coming from Anki’s sync with AnkiWeb, not from AnkiHub or the AnKing v12 deck itself. The deck upgrade didn’t directly cause it.

A few things to try systematically:

1. Basic checks

  1. Restart Anki and your computer
    Then try syncing again.

  2. Try a different network

    • If you’re on school/work WiFi, try:
      • Phone hotspot
      • Home WiFi or another network
Some institution firewalls block or inspect HTTPS traffic in a way that breaks Anki sync.

2. Check firewalls / antivirus / VPN

Anki needs outbound HTTPS access to *.ankiweb.net. Please:

  • Temporarily turn off any VPN, proxy, or corporate security app and try syncing.
  • If you have a firewall/antivirus (e.g. Windows Defender, McAfee, etc.):
    • Add an exception for Anki.
    • Make sure outbound connections to:
      • ankiweb.net
      • sync.ankiweb.net
      • sync2.ankiweb.net
      • (and other *.ankiweb.net domains)
        are allowed.

If you’re on a school or work computer/network, you may need your IT department to allow *.ankiweb.net over HTTPS.

3. Rule out add‑on conflicts

Even though this looks like a network issue, it’s worth checking for add‑on interference:

  1. Close Anki.
  2. Re‑open Anki while holding Shift (this disables add‑ons for that session).
  3. Try syncing again.
  • If sync works with add‑ons disabled, an add‑on (less likely AnkiHub, more likely a networking/security add‑on) is interfering.
    • Re‑enable add‑ons in batches to find the culprit.

4. Confirm Anki version & account

  • In Anki, go to Help → About and make sure you’re on the latest version from apps.ankiweb.net.
  • Go to Tools → Preferences → Syncing and confirm you’re logged into the correct AnkiWeb account and that it doesn’t immediately show an error there.

5. How this relates to AnkiHub / AnKing v12

  • AnkiHub sync (the add‑on’s own connection) is separate from AnkiWeb sync:
    • If AnkiHub syncing works but AnkiWeb fails, the issue is almost certainly firewall / network / antivirus for *.ankiweb.net.
  • Upgrading to AnKing v12 or installing the AnkiHub add‑on does not change Anki’s AnkiWeb sync configuration.

6. If it’s still not working

Please reply with:

  1. Your operating system (Windows/macOS/Linux).
  2. Your Anki version (from Help → About).
  3. Whether you’re on a school/work or home network.
  4. Whether AnkiHub sync (the blue AnkiHub icon) works or also errors.

With that, we can narrow down if anything AnkiHub‑related is involved, or if you’ll need to post on the main Anki support forum for deeper AnkiWeb/network troubleshooting.

I’m on a windows computer on the latest version of Anki, using a home network. AnkiHub sync seems to work ok.

Hello,

First, please update Anki and the AnkiHub add-on.

Anki: You can download it here: https://apps.ankiweb.net/. After downloading, simply run the downloaded file to update your application.

AnkiHub add-on: On your Anki main screen, go to Tools > Add-ons > Check for Updates. After the update is complete, please restart Anki.
