FSRS-5 Optimize Preset error message

When I click ā€œoptimize current presetā€ on Anki FSRS-5, I get this message, ā€œNo reviews found. Please check that this preset is assigned to all decks you want to optimize (including subdecks) and try again.ā€ How can I fix this? I need some guidance to fix the issue and optimize my Anking MCAT deck.

Thank you in advance!

Hello,

I’d be happy to help.

First: have you checked that this preset is assigned to the deck/s you want to optimize? That would be the first step.

Second: I notice, in the images that you shared, that your preset is named ā€˜Default’ (which is fine), though in the FSRS optimization window you have the preset ā€œMy new settingsā€ which does not match your actual deck preset.

Thus, what I suspect is happening, is that you are directing FSRS to look for a specific preset (ā€œMy new settingsā€ that either does not exist, or does not contain any review history).

The first thing I would try is to leave that section blank, and then try to click optimize.

Let me know how that works, and where you land, and we’ll go from there.

I deleted ā€œMy new settingsā€ and was able to ā€œoptimizeā€ but is said the current setting has been optimized. How can I make it so that the dates aren’t so spread out? For example, again here is 2 days, hard is 21 days, and good is 1 month, and this is how all my mature cards look. Also, can I use the ā€œhardā€ button on FSRS-5 or no? If I keep pressing the ā€œagainā€ button I will have so much cards to do. I thought FSRS-5 was suppose to lower the load of work :sob:

With FSRS you can’t really control the intervals, per se. But, all things being equal the higher your desired retention the shorter the intervals (and the higher the resulting workload).

So the general consensus is to set the desired retention that you want, and to trust the algorithm from there.

Yeah, you can use the Hard button as intended.

It’s not quite that simple, unfortunately.

So let’s look at the first part: if you want shorter intervals that’s going to mean seeing cards more often. Which is going to mean more cards, and a higher average daily review burden. There’s no way around that, ultimately.

But, FSRS is not guaranteed to always mean a lower workload. Being a more efficient algorithm it will, all things being equal, give you a lower workload for the same retention (or a higher retention for the same workload), as compared to SM-2.

Depending on the desired retention you select, and how that compares to your historical retention, that does not, in all cases, always equal out to a lower resulting workload. FSRS still is, though, the superior algorithm by a country mile so it’s still ultimately recommended.

Let me know if that answers your question/s, and/or if there’s anything else I can shed light on or otherwise with which I can be of help.
