Hellos guys i got a question, how do i shorten this interval (1st picture) cause im sure il forget it in 3+ months and also i dont wanna mess up an ease by clicking hard just want more gradual increase in timeline cause 2x jumps is i think too much for me. I also would love to hear your opinion guys, i think might be doing something wrong cause my ease looks like (2nd picture) this and is it normal or i should change something in my prep? wanna know what yours look like
The Anki algorithm is probably right for your intervals (if it’s not the first time you’re seeing the card that you sent the screenshot).
About your cards with 130% ease. This just means that you are finding hard to remember some cards, this can be because you didn’t really understand the card or your settings are keeping the interval too long. You can click on that bar on the chart and flag these cards to study then with more attention. You can also make a filtered deck with these cards to make sure you’re going to remember then.
If you really want to see cards more frequently, you can set the maximum interval to less than 180 days. That way the card interval will cap at the number of days you choose.
You can also change the interval modifier to less than 1.00. This is basically the number that every interval is multiplied by, if you lower it, all intervals will be shortened.
But be careful because this will increase your number of reviews per day.
yes i understand everything i have lot of card on 130 % ease cause i dont want them to be jumping 2x or more cause for example if card jumps from 2 months to 4-5 months im completely forgetting it and so in that scenario i am just clicking hard which decreased ease by 15% every time and so i was just wandering if there was anything from settings which i could change so only interval i provided would decrease and wont affect anything else
For example like in the 1st picture instead of 3.6 months card to be thrown to 2 months or 2.5 months, just to decrease the this specific interval from hard to good
In theory, if the Anki algorithm sets an interval of 3.6 months, it’s because you’re likely to remember it.
In that specific situation, lowering the interval modifier would affect all intervals, so I think that’s not the way to go.
If you are sure you want your maximum intervals to be between 2 and 2.5 months—because if it’s more than that, you’re sure you’re going to forget it—I recommend lowering your maximum interval from 180 days to something like 60 or 75 days.
That way, you’re not going to face any cards with an interval longer than that and you are going to be able to hit “good” without any increase in that interval and without messing with your ease!
But keep in mind that restricting Anki settings in that way will increase your workload. Unfortunately, there’s no way to decrease the intervals of your cards without facing a higher number of reviews per day.
i would also gladly hear your opinions guys about this % is it normal or should i make a transition on FSRS or make some changes to increase it, what do you think? i dont know whats the good % to compare to, should it be 90+ or 95+?
FSRS is a better algorithm than SM-2. It optimizes intervals more efficiently, reducing your workload. This means you’ll have longer intervals and will need to trust the algorithm more.
If you’re unsure about making the switch because your exam is approaching, it’s okay to stick with SM-2, it’s a good algorithm as well.
The recommended retention rate is 90%. Take a look at this chart:
Your retention rates are really good, that’s definitely higher than mine when I used SM-2.
I would recommend reducing the maximum interval if you want but this will increase your average card amount over time.
I had mine set to 3 months when I took Step 1 and that was good for me so I can see all the cards before my exam, but it ended up being a ton of cards per day
So in short if i switch now how long will it take for algorithm to optimize itself generally speaking? does it take weeks or its gonna optimize itself right away?
My plan was to not decrease interval but rather mark cards that helped me answer Uwold Q banks and NBME Q banks and do them before exam 1 month earlier separately. What do you say? and also whats your opinion? would it have been better for you if you switched to FSRS algorithm instead of shortening intervals looking from todays point?
Im sorry guys if i have lot of questions and annoyed you
The FSRS algorithm learns from your reviews, so the more reviews you have in total, the more efficient it will be.
If you switch to FSRS and check the “Reschedule cards on change” option, all your intervals will update instantly, which can be overwhelming to adapt to. If you leave it unchecked, FSRS will only apply new intervals after you review a card, making the transition more gradual.
Also, you can switch back to SM-2 at any time, as Anki will continue tracking your cards ease. However, FSRS does not use ease at all.
First of all, all your questions are very welcome! Don’t be afraid to ask!
To mark these cards, you can simply flag them. Then, about a month before your exam, you can create a filtered deck using that flag to study them separately.
From my personal experience, when FSRS first came out, I was close to an exam, so I stuck with SM-2. After the exam, I switched to FSRS, and it turned out to be the best algorithm ever! You just need to set the right retention, use the review buttons correctly, and trust the algorithm.
You can switch now or after your exam, it’s totally up to you. SM-2 it’s good too and will do the work for your near exam!
I am so grateful for the time you took and answered all my question i appreciate it a lot really, i will then keep SM-2 cause im very used to this algorithm. At first i was very skeptical on FSRS cause you don’t control the timeline of cards precisely but now i understood it and will make a change after step 1 exam. Once again thank you
I wouldn’t switch. I was in your boat actually. I didn’t switch to FSRS until after I took Step 1. I stayed with SM-2 until the exam because I didn’t want to risk switching and messing anything up.
Goodluck on your exam and feel free to ask whenever
