How to change the "reveal next" keyboard shortcut?

Hi,
I tried changing the keyboard shortcut from a post here, that involved editing the json file of the shortcuts, but that did not work. Also, the add-on available for shortcuts seems to be obsolete.

I want to change the “reveal next” shortcut from “N” to the"~" key for better one handed use.

Please help me do this.
Thanks a lot!

Hello,

I’m not sure which add-on you’re referring to that is obsolete?

But, the easiest method would be to use the Anking Note Types feature that allows you to specify the button-mapping for ‘reveal cloze’:

The add-on itself is handy for a few things, but we’ll walk through how to use to adjust this particular shortcut:

First, you’ll want to install the addon. The webpage for the addon is here (https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/952691989) though if it’s easier you can just use this code: 952691989

Once installed, you should see ‘AnKing’ at the top of your menu bar. Click here:

From there, you can select the note type you want to specify this behavior for (you may have to adjust both ‘general’ and the specific note type, for a few reasons):

Once you’ve done that, you should be able to restart Anki and be all set.

There are other add-ons that are more specialized in shortcut mapping, but this is the most direct path to what you described.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

Ealier I was talking about this add-on: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/24411424

Your method worked perfectly for the Anking overhaul notetype thank you. BUT…

I had cloned “Anking” note type to to create my own deck. (as I am used to the formatting of anking note) (i found this to be the easiest way)

I want to apply the same shortcut to that new note type also, but since the add on you mentioned only has Anking notetypes, I am unable to do so.
As you said, the change needs to be applied to the ‘general’ tab + the specific note-type tab.

Is there a way to achieve this?

I still use that add-on daily, and it works fine on my end, FWIW. You may need to reinstall it or update your version of Anki, I’m not sure. But I definitely still use it without issue.

That I’m less certain of. In theory a cloned note type should be similar, but that isn’t always the case as note type updates come and go.

You might dig through the CSS code in the note type and see what can be achieved. Or, there might be a way with a separate add-on but I’m not honestly sure.

Once you get to different notes, even cloned ones, the specificity of the app gets funky and things get a lot murkier.

In a pinch, you might be able to convert all the cards using the cloned note type to the actual Anking note type. This may or may not resolve the issue, but that’s reaching out beyond my technical wheelhouse, I’m sorry to say.

Seems like i was editing the wrong variable. It works now.
(I had to change the “add cloze with no increment” variable, was changing “add cloze alt” variable)

Hi, I changed the notes to the OG anking notetype. New shortcut key works for all my cards now.

I had cloned note type + made a separate deck. Only making new deck works just as fine. I’ll still be able to use the formatting while keeping the new cards I create, in a separate deck.

Huge thanks to you Brian  :green_heart:
God bless you. You made my life easy.

Awesome, that’s great news.

Happy to help anytime. Please reach out anytime you have any questions and I’ll do my best to be of help.
