I am trying to add a reveal next option on my Anki remote but am not sure where to start. I have tried the AnKing note types customizationâchanged both general and AnKingOverhaul cloze shortcutsâand then changed controller options. Unfortunately nothing changed and this is the extent of my tech savviness. I just want to use my remote with my laptop and not have to touch my keyboard at all.

Youâre on the right track by changing shortcuts, but the key is:
- Figure out what key your remote is actually sending.
- Bind that key in Anki to the âShow Answerâ / âRevealâ action.
Since you mentioned âreveal next,â Iâll assume you want your remote button to:
- Reveal the answer on a card (i.e. âShow Answerâ), and then
- Advance to the next card with another press (Anki does this by default once the answer is shown).
Hereâs how you can proceed step by step:
1. See what your remote is doing
- Open a text editor (Notepad, TextEdit, etc.).
- Click into the blank document.
- Press the remote button you want to use for âreveal next.â
- Note what appears:
- If it types a letter (e.g.,
b,n,space, enter), write that down. - If nothing appears, the remote might be sending a special key (like PageDown) that doesnât show directly. Try:
- Pressing it in a browser address bar to see if anything happens (e.g., space/pgdn scrolls).
- Testing different buttons on the remote.
- If it types a letter (e.g.,
If you canât tell at all what itâs sending, let me know the remote model and whether youâre on Windows/Mac, and weâll try some OS-level tests.
2. Map that key to âShow Answerâ in Anki
- In Anki, go to:
Tools â Preferences â Review (or Tools â Preferences â Basic depending on Anki version). - Look for âShortcutsâ or click âCustomizeâ (in the new versions itâs Tools â Add-ons â Customize Keyboard Shortcuts if you use a shortcut add-on; for AnKing Overhaul, you may have a separate config).
- Find the action for:
- Show Answer (sometimes called âShow/Hide Answerâ or âReview: Show Answerâ).
- Click to change the shortcut and press the same key that your remote sends (for example, spacebar or
b). - Save and restart Anki just to be safe.
Once this is set:
- On the question side, pressing the remote button = reveal the answer.
- On the answer side, the same key usually acts as the default âGoodâ/advance button â moves you to next card.
So effectively, your remote button becomes âreveal next.â
3. Interaction with AnKing note types & AnkiHub
The âAnKing note types customizationâ and âAnKingOverhaul cloze shortcutsâ mostly affect:
- In-editor / note-type specific behavior
- Extra features of the AnKing Overhaul add-on
They donât override the main Anki âShow Answerâ/review hotkeys. Thatâs why changing those didnât affect your remote behavior.
For AnkiHub specifically:
- You can safely adjust your personal keyboard shortcuts; they wonât affect the shared deck on AnkiHub.
- AnkiHub just syncs notes/fields/tags, not your local keybindings.
4. If this still doesnât work
Reply with:
- Your operating system (Windows / macOS / Linux).
- The exact model of your remote.
- What key(s) show up when you press the remote in a text editor (or if nothing shows up).
Then I can give more tailored, click-by-click instructions for your setup.
Hello,
I would be happy to help. ![]()
Unfortunately, it will depend to some degree on which program youâre using to connect your remote, the details of which may be outside of my knowledge range.
But, the necessary underpinning will be using the AnKing Note Types add-on to assign a âcustom user actionâ to the note type as so:
From there, you can adjust whichever remote-mapping program to assign a button to âuser action 1.â That may look a few different ways depending which program youâre using, but that should be the broad strokes.
At least on our end, thatâs the thing youâll want to change. If this doesnât do the trick it may also be worth troubleshooting the interface software that youâre using for your remote.
Thank you for that! I did the first part prior to posting and didnât see a change. I used the Contanki controller add-on to configure my remote but am open to other mapping programs if you are more familiar with another.
Of course, always happy to be of help. ![]()
At least on our end, that should be all that is required. From our end, that part should be all that is required in order to make the functionality apparent. Once thatâs done, you may have to tinker with your button-mapping to make sure that itâs all set up on that end
I believe there are a few button-mapping software options out there, though I canât say Iâm personally familiar with them too terribly much. You might check your Contanki settings and make sure that your button-mappings there are set up appropriately, as that seems like the likeliest candidate for preventing the functionality from executing appropriately
Youâll want to make sure, obviously, that you have a specific button mapped to the âcustom user action 1â function.
