Reveal Next Anki Remote Configuration

I am trying to add a reveal next option on my Anki remote but am not sure where to start. I have tried the AnKing note types customization–changed both general and AnKingOverhaul cloze shortcuts–and then changed controller options. Unfortunately nothing changed and this is the extent of my tech savviness. I just want to use my remote with my laptop and not have to touch my keyboard at all.

You’re on the right track by changing shortcuts, but the key is:

  1. Figure out what key your remote is actually sending.
  2. Bind that key in Anki to the “Show Answer” / “Reveal” action.

Since you mentioned “reveal next,” I’ll assume you want your remote button to:

  • Reveal the answer on a card (i.e. “Show Answer”), and then
  • Advance to the next card with another press (Anki does this by default once the answer is shown).

Here’s how you can proceed step by step:

1. See what your remote is doing

  1. Open a text editor (Notepad, TextEdit, etc.).
  2. Click into the blank document.
  3. Press the remote button you want to use for “reveal next.”
  4. Note what appears:
    • If it types a letter (e.g., b, n, space, enter), write that down.
    • If nothing appears, the remote might be sending a special key (like PageDown) that doesn’t show directly. Try:
      • Pressing it in a browser address bar to see if anything happens (e.g., space/pgdn scrolls).
      • Testing different buttons on the remote.

If you can’t tell at all what it’s sending, let me know the remote model and whether you’re on Windows/Mac, and we’ll try some OS-level tests.

2. Map that key to “Show Answer” in Anki

  1. In Anki, go to:
Tools → Preferences → Review (or Tools → Preferences → Basic depending on Anki version).
  2. Look for “Shortcuts” or click “Customize” (in the new versions it’s Tools → Add-ons → Customize Keyboard Shortcuts if you use a shortcut add-on; for AnKing Overhaul, you may have a separate config).
  3. Find the action for:
    • Show Answer (sometimes called “Show/Hide Answer” or “Review: Show Answer”).
  4. Click to change the shortcut and press the same key that your remote sends (for example, spacebar or b).
  5. Save and restart Anki just to be safe.

Once this is set:

  • On the question side, pressing the remote button = reveal the answer.
  • On the answer side, the same key usually acts as the default “Good”/advance button → moves you to next card.

So effectively, your remote button becomes “reveal next.”

3. Interaction with AnKing note types & AnkiHub

The “AnKing note types customization” and “AnKingOverhaul cloze shortcuts” mostly affect:

  • In-editor / note-type specific behavior
  • Extra features of the AnKing Overhaul add-on

They don’t override the main Anki “Show Answer”/review hotkeys. That’s why changing those didn’t affect your remote behavior.

For AnkiHub specifically:

  • You can safely adjust your personal keyboard shortcuts; they won’t affect the shared deck on AnkiHub.
  • AnkiHub just syncs notes/fields/tags, not your local keybindings.

4. If this still doesn’t work

Reply with:

  • Your operating system (Windows / macOS / Linux).
  • The exact model of your remote.
  • What key(s) show up when you press the remote in a text editor (or if nothing shows up).

Then I can give more tailored, click-by-click instructions for your setup.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

Unfortunately, it will depend to some degree on which program you’re using to connect your remote, the details of which may be outside of my knowledge range.

But, the necessary underpinning will be using the AnKing Note Types add-on to assign a ‘custom user action’ to the note type as so:

From there, you can adjust whichever remote-mapping program to assign a button to ‘user action 1.’ That may look a few different ways depending which program you’re using, but that should be the broad strokes.

At least on our end, that’s the thing you’ll want to change. If this doesn’t do the trick it may also be worth troubleshooting the interface software that you’re using for your remote.

Thank you for that! I did the first part prior to posting and didn’t see a change. I used the Contanki controller add-on to configure my remote but am open to other mapping programs if you are more familiar with another.

Of course, always happy to be of help.

At least on our end, that should be all that is required. From our end, that part should be all that is required in order to make the functionality apparent. Once that’s done, you may have to tinker with your button-mapping to make sure that it’s all set up on that end

I believe there are a few button-mapping software options out there, though I can’t say I’m personally familiar with them too terribly much. You might check your Contanki settings and make sure that your button-mappings there are set up appropriately, as that seems like the likeliest candidate for preventing the functionality from executing appropriately

You’ll want to make sure, obviously, that you have a specific button mapped to the ‘custom user action 1’ function.
