Linking that page is helpful—it shows exactly which tags in the UWorld_NBME Optional extension are optional.

A few key points that usually explain the “12k vs 6.8k” difference:

  1. The 12k number = all optional cards combined
The card count you see on AnkiHub (e.g., ~12k) is the total possible optional cards across all those tags (like certain NBME blocks, UWorld versions, etc.).

  2. You only get the cards for the tags you actually enable

    • When you install the optional extension, AnkiHub only adds cards for the tags you’ve turned on in the extension settings.
    • If only some tags are enabled, you’ll see fewer than 12k cards in Anki (e.g., 6.8k).
  3. How to check / change this:

    • Go to the extension page you linked:
      https://app.ankihub.net/deck_extensions/379/details/
    • Click “Edit Extension” (or similar wording).
    • Under Optional Tags, look for checkboxes/switches next to each tag.
    • Enable the tags whose cards you actually want.
    • Click Save, then in Anki:
      1. Sync AnkiHub (AnkiHub add-on → Sync),
      2. Then Anki → Sync.
  4. Confirm card count in Anki:

    • In Anki, right‑click the deck → Browse.
    • Filter by deck name and see the card count at the top.
    • You can also search by one of the optional tags (e.g. tag:uworld_nbme::something) to verify those cards are present.

If you tell me:

  • How many tags you currently have enabled on that extension, and
  • The exact deck name you see in Anki,

I can help you figure out whether your 6.8k matches the expected card count for that selection or if something’s missing.

The author says its 12k cards after filtering from anki, and it only shows 6.8k to me**

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

From what you’ve shared, it appears that you’re referencing an optional tag that was uploaded by an individual user:

As it is a private tag, and not one maintained by the AnkiHub team, it may be somewhat outside of what we can help with. It may also be that the author is mistaken, and/or that there have been changes made over time that are not reflected in the number you were given. Likely the only way to know for sure would be to contact the author of the optional tag to know best

There are a couple of things you can try in the interim, though:

  • First, you might double-check that you’re looking at cards, and not notes. The two are related, though not identical, and count values can vary considerably
  • Second, you might try unsubscribing and resubscribing to the optional tag, as well as resetting it by following this tutorial: How to Reset Local Changes to an Optional Tag Group

Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.
