I have two anking overhaul decks

Hi, I subscribed to an anking overhaul step 1 and 2 deck. But for some reason, I have two anking overhaul step 1 and 2 decks. The deck made by anking has about 35,000 cards The first AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 deck has about 16,565 cards. The second one named AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 (AnkiHub) has about 12,712 cards. I’m not sure which deck is made by anking.
Even if I would to add the numbers, it doesn’t equate to 35K cards.
I usually study cards by tags and when I do it populates into the first AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 deck.
Is there any way to find out which one is the original deck? And also, how come I don’t have 35K total cards like other people

Here’s what’s going on and how to fix it:

1. Which deck is the “real” AnKing Overhaul deck?

For AnkiHub users:

  • AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 (AnkiHub)
→ This is the AnkiHub‑linked version that receives updates from the AnKing team via AnkiHub.
  • The other deck, AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 (without “AnkiHub” in the name)
→ Is almost certainly an older / local / non‑AnkiHub copy (e.g., from before you subscribed, or imported separately).

To confirm inside Anki:

  1. Open the AnkiHub add-on → Manage AnkiHub Decks.
  2. Find the AnKing Step 1 & 2 deck you subscribed to.
  3. Click it and check which deck name in Anki it is linked to.
    • That deck is the one you should keep and study from.

2. Why do you not see ~35k cards?

A few common reasons:

  1. Duplicate / partial imports
    • If you previously imported an older version of the deck (or only certain tags) and then subscribed on AnkiHub, the cards may be split across the two decks or some notes might not have imported.
  2. Filtered or tag-only imports
    • If you “added cards by tags” from a source deck into a new deck, you may have moved only subsets of the total cards.
  3. Suspended or buried cards don’t change total count
    • But if you’re comparing with someone else’s count, they might include all versions (v11 + v12, etc.) or have extra add-on decks.

The official AnkiHub AnKing Step deck FAQ (linked here: :red_question_mark: AnKing Step Deck FAQs) confirms the AnkiHub version is the current, official one to use.

3. What I recommend you do

  1. Verify which deck is linked in AnkiHub (as above).
  2. Move all cards you’re actually using into that one AnkiHub-linked deck, then:
    • In the Browser, search in the non‑AnkiHub deck and Change Deck… → move them into the (AnkiHub) deck.
  3. Once you’re sure everything is consolidated and syncing correctly:
    • Delete the extra non‑AnkiHub copy of the deck to avoid confusion.

If you’re comfortable sharing:

  • Go to the Browser, select each of the two decks separately, and check:
    • The note count (not just card count)
    • Any unusual tags (e.g. is:new, extra::, etc.)
Post those numbers in the thread and I can help you confirm if you’re missing content and how to restore the full ~35k cards.

where do i find the AnkiHub add-on → Manage AnkiHub Decks portion of this

To confirm inside Anki:

  1. Open the AnkiHub add-on → Manage AnkiHub Decks.

  2. Find the AnKing Step 1 & 2 deck you subscribed to.

  3. Click it and check which deck name in Anki it is linked to.

    • That deck is the one you should keep and study from.

and also how do i find the note count and unusual tags

Go to the Browser, select each of the two decks separately, and check:

  • The note count (not just card count)

  • Any unusual tags (e.g. is:new, extra::, etc.)
Post those numbers in the thread and I can help you confirm if you’re missing content and how to restore the full ~35k cards.

Here’s how to do both parts step‑by‑step.

1. Open AnkiHub → Manage AnkiHub Decks

In the Anki desktop app (not AnkiWeb):

  1. At the top menu bar, click Tools → Add‑ons.
  2. In the list, select AnkiHub.
  3. Click Config or View (depending on your version) and then choose Manage AnkiHub Decks.
    • On recent versions, there’s also an “AnkiHub” menu item directly in Anki’s top menu; if you see that, click it and choose Manage AnkiHub Decks.

Inside Manage AnkiHub Decks, find the AnKing Step 1 & 2 deck you subscribed to and see which local deck name it’s linked to (e.g. AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 (AnkiHub)). That’s the one we’ll ultimately keep.

If you don’t see AnkiHub at all in Tools → Add‑ons, let me know and we’ll confirm the add‑on is installed/enabled.

2. Check note count and tags for each deck

In Anki’s Browser:

  1. From the main deck screen, click Browse (top bar).
  2. On the left sidebar, under Decks, click once on:
    • AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2
    • then later, AnKing Overhaul for Step 1 & 2 (AnkiHub)

For each deck, do this:

a. Note count

  • After you click the deck name, look at the bottom bar of the Browser.
    It will say something like:
X notes selected (for example, 18,532 notes selected).
  • That “notes” number is what I need for each deck.

b. Tags

  • In the left sidebar, click the Tags section.
  • Scroll through and look for anything that seems unusual for an AnKing Step deck, for example:
    • Very specific or personal tags you made yourself
    • Anything that looks like it might have moved cards out of the main deck
  • You don’t need to list every tag—just anything that stands out or looks related to subsets you created.

If you reply with:

  1. Which deck AnkiHub says it’s linked to, and
  2. The note counts for both decks,

I can tell you if you’re actually missing content and walk you through consolidating everything into the correct AnkiHub deck.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

From the looks of it, you may have had some previous AnKing cards in your collection and thus the decks have fused, or overwritten. This is pretty common owing to the way that the Anki software handles decks, and importing collections that may share a lineage. All is not lost, though

If you go to the Browse screen, within Anki, you should be able to locate the correct cards by looking at the appropriate tags:

From here, you can isolate the cards that belong to the current Anking Step deck (one tag for each of the Step1, Step2, and Step3 cards, respectively)

From there, you may naturally want to move your cards around or reorganize your local collection as best fits your preferences, and this can also be easily enough done. This tutorial can walk you through how to move cards around by using tags: How to Create Subdecks

That should allow you to organize at least the cards that currently belong to the AnKing Step deck. It may be that you have other cards in your collection as well, either from previous collections or other decks, though I may not have as much insight or be able to be of as much help there, unfortunately

Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.

hi thanks for getting back to me!
so at baseline all my cards are suspended and depending on whatever rotation I’m on, i usually go to the AK_Step2_v12 tag → go under shelf → click the tag pertaining to the rotation im in. (lets say peds)
So I would unsuspend the Peds deck from the tags portion and it has 1998 cards. And for some reason, it populates under the first Anking Overahul for Step 1 and 2 not the one with that has (Ankihub) at the end of it…. But if I were to click the Peds section on my home page it says i have 1503 cards and some cards are still suspended so im confused!!

This happens with every rotation and I’m scared. I’m missing out on cards, especially with my step exam coming up..

I’m sorry to say I’m not sure. It looks like you may have had some wires cross here, either from previous cards in your collection or something else. Additionally, it looks like you hve a few decks, and subdecks, that have been self-organized so it’s hard to say which cards are where, and there may not be a way for me to know, ultimately.

But, no need to worry or be confused. You should be able to follow the instructions I posted above and you can be 100% certain that you have all of the cards, and that they are in the right place. If you would like to move them or place them in a different deck, or subdeck, you can easily do so and it won’t have any negative effects on your cards or your collection.

If you have any other questions, or if there is anything else we can help with, please don’t hesitate to reach out and happy to do our best. :mending_heart:

I think I may have found the issue, but I’m not sure. I did this over a year ago, but I think I had already created subdecks, which is why you see a deck for family medicine internal medicine, OBGYN, etc under the first anking overhaul for step 1 and 2

  1. Is there any way to confirm that I created those subdecks?
  2. Even if I did create those sub decks , the card numbers still don’t equalize between the tagged peds portion under the AK_step 2_v12 and the peds subdeck i have

also, when I’m under the tagged portion, I see this
“ your database appears to be inconsistent state. Please use the check database action. No such deck”

The Anki software doesn’t have an explicit way to inform who created a specific subdeck, unfortunately, though I can say that it did not come with the AnKing Step deck as the deck does not come with subdecks by default (it did a few years back, but has not in a few years now).

The likelier scenario, in most cases, will be that the subdeck was made locally (by you)

Your best bet will be to judge card numbers using the tags I linked to above. I can’t say much about what’s in your decks, or what’s located where, unfortunately. There just isn’t a way for me to know, I’m sorry to say, as I don’t have any way to have any insight into the state, or history, of your local collection ultimately

If you want to click on the Step1_v12 tag and let me know how many cards are listed as being present, I can give you an idea if you’re missing any cards but that’s about all the insight I can have into your local collection, for better or worse

Gotcha, you might want to use the check databse action then.

From your main Anki screen, you can go to the top tool bar: Tools - Check Database, and run that function.

Give that a shot, let me know how you fare, and we’ll go from there and hopefully we can get you squared away.

so i clicked checked database (i did it earlier in the day too)
i got

“Found ⁨3⁩ new cards with a due number >= 1,000,000 - consider repositioning them in the Browse screen.

Fixed ⁨42⁊ invalid card properties.

Fixed ⁨1⁊ missing deck.

Database rebuilt and optimized.”

annddd when i click under tags AK_step2_v12 i have 25811 cards

Sounds like you’re all set.

From what you’ve described, all of the cards that should be there are indeed there, which is good news.

From there, since all of the cards that should be there are there, from the sound of it all that’s left is to organize your local collection as you see fit. The instructions I shared earlier should walk you through how to do that, though if you have any other questions please feel free to reach out and happy to be of help however we can. :mending_heart:
