I updated from an old version of anking to a new version, and now my deck is completely broken…
My previous version was like a year old, and I recently bought the yearly subscription. After I updated, for some reason, the number of cards in the deck has went down. I compared with another friend who has the most updated version of anking and he has more cards than me…
I also noticed that the tags in my anking have doubled. Like for instance, I have both 19_Renal and 21_Renal for boards and beyond, and there are some cards in 19_Renal and most in 21_Renal… this is the case for every module in boards.
Why am I missing cards? Also each time I sync, i for some reason lose more cards. I dont know what’s going on. The decks that I have also dont show a preview of the card for some reason. See screenshots below.
I’ll help you understand what’s happening with your AnKing decks after the update. Let me search for some relevant information that might explain the issues you’re experiencing.

Thanks for reaching out about your AnKing deck issues. Based on your description, there are a few things happening that are common when updating from an older version of the AnKing deck to a newer one via AnkiHub.
The Issue with Tags
The doubling of tags (having both 19_Renal and 21_Renal) is likely because the AnKing team reorganized their tagging system between versions. This is normal when updating from an older version to a newer one. The newer version (21_Renal) contains the most updated content, while the older tags (19_Renal) contain the cards from your previous version.
Missing Cards
There are a few possible reasons for your missing cards:
Updating from V11 to V12: When updating from an older version to V12 via AnkiHub, your cards get updated in their existing location rather than creating a completely new deck. The system matches cards based on note IDs.
Destination for New Cards: AnkiHub requires a destination setting for new cards. If this isn’t set properly, new cards might not appear where you expect them to be.
Card vs Note Counts: What might look like missing cards could be a misunderstanding between note counts and card counts. AnKi differentiates between notes (content) and cards (individual flashcards).
Steps to Fix:
Check for a second AnKing deck: You might have two AnKing decks if AnkiHub created a new one without a proper destination set.
Move your cards to a new deck:
Create a new deck (name it something like “AnKing Step Deck V12”)
Go to Browse → Note Types → Find “AnKing Overhaul”
Highlight all cards → Right-click → Change deck
Move them to your new deck
Set a destination for new cards:
In the AnkiHub add-on, go to Deck Management
Select the AnKing Overhaul Deck
Click “Change destination for new cards” and set it to your new deck
Reset local changes (if needed):
Go to Browse → AnkiHub add-on tab
Click “Reset all local changes”
This should help restore your cards and organize them properly. Your sync issues may be related to these same configuration problems.
Let me know if you need more specific help with any of these steps!
Please follow these steps so we can get you set up properly:
On your Anki main screen, go to AnkiHub > Deck Management. Select the AnKing Step Deck and then check if the destination for new cards is set to the correct deck.
I see 25,886 cards in the deck. I followed all the instructions you said to, and I dont see a change in the number of cards, however the tags are more aligned now.
I see 1463 cards in Renal B&B for step 1 even though my friend has over 1650.
Please ensure you are on the latest version of Anki. You can download it here: https://apps.ankiweb.net/. After downloading, simply run the downloaded file to update your application.
Next, update the AnkiHub add-on. On your Anki main screen, go to Tools > Add-ons > Check for Updates. After the update is complete, please restart Anki.
After completing all those steps, please click on the tag #AK_Step1_v12 again and tell me how many cards it shows in the top-left corner. Please also do this for the Note type AnKingOverhaul (AnKing Step Deck / AnKing med).
Also, I see that you have a filtered deck named “Custom Study Session.” If this deck has a considerable number of cards from the AnKing Step Deck, could you please empty this deck just so we can make sure nothing else is causing this issue?
Thank you for the detailed solutions! This won’t reset my card progress right? I’m in my second year so I’ve done a bunch of cards already and don’t want to lose my progress.
Don’t worry. Nothing that I suggest should interfere with your progress.
The only potential exception is the filtered deck I mentioned. I don’t really know what you have in that deck, so if you choose to empty it, you may be losing some progress on that specific filtered deck. (Generally, these decks don’t interfere with anything, but I am trying to rule out any possible interference to make sure we solve this issue.)
