Not sure if anyone has encountered this, but in Anki 25.09 for Windows PC, I found that cloze 1-by-1 cards would reveal a random number of clozes at a time. I have since downgraded one release, which has resolved the issue, but I wanted to describe what I encountered in case someone finds it helpful;
Using a keyboard shortcut to reveal cloze deletions 1-by-1 was not working, and would reveal anywhere from 1 to 5 cloze deletions at a time (I stopped counting after 5). Strangely enough, the template behaved correctly in the template editing dialogue - I only ever had problems when reviewing. Furthermore, there was no issue if I manually clicked the âReveal Nextâ or âToggle Allâ buttons. Besides the 1-by-1 reveal function, all other keyboard shortcuts behaved normally when reviewing cards.
Iâll help you with this issue about cloze deletions in Anki 25.09.2. Let me search for relevant information to better understand what might be happening.

Thanks for reporting this issue with cloze 1-by-1 cards in Anki 25.09.2. This seems to be a specific bug in that version of Anki where multiple clozes are being revealed at once when using keyboard shortcuts, even though the template itself appears to work correctly in the editor.
Based on your description:
- The issue only happens during review, not in the template editor
- It reveals a random number of clozes (1-5+) at once
- Manual clicking of âReveal Nextâ or âToggle Allâ buttons works fine
- Other keyboard shortcuts function normally
- Downgrading fixed the issue
From what I can see in our documentation, the standard keyboard shortcuts for one-by-one cloze cards are:
n to reveal each cloze sequentially
, to toggle all clozes at once
The fact that you resolved this by downgrading suggests this is indeed a bug in Anki 25.09.2 specifically. I donât see any other reports of this exact issue in our community, which suggests it might be either:
- A new bug in 25.09.2
- A bug that affects specific setups or card templates
If youâre using AnKing note types or decks with the one-by-one feature, this shortcut functionality is an important part of your workflow. Since downgrading solved your issue, thatâs a good temporary solution.
Would you be able to share which specific version you downgraded to that resolved the issue? This would help others who might encounter the same problem.
Do you have the AnKing Note Types add-on installed and note types updated?
I downloaded the addon and reset my card templates, but it didnât fix the issue :â(
I actually saw the issue come back some time after downgrading to Anki 24.11. It is affecting Anki on two of my machines (both Windows).
Iâll help investigate this cloze 1-by-1 card issue youâre experiencing across multiple Anki versions.

Iâm sorry to hear youâre still experiencing this issue even after downgrading to Anki 24.11. This seems to be a persistent problem affecting your cloze 1-by-1 cards across multiple versions and machines.
Since youâve already tried:
- Downgrading Anki
- Installing the AnKing Note Types add-on
- Resetting card templates
Letâs try some additional troubleshooting steps:
Possible Solutions:
-
Check for Add-on Conflicts:
- Try disabling other add-ons by starting Anki while holding down the Shift key
- Re-enable add-ons one by one to identify if any specific add-on is causing this issue
-
Clear Browser Cache:
- In Anki, go to Tools â Preferences â Network â Clear Cache
-
Check JavaScript Console for Errors:
- While reviewing, press F12 to open the developer console
- Look for any JavaScript errors related to cloze functionality
-
Try a Different Note Type:
- Create a test note with a basic cloze template (not the AnKing one-by-one)
- See if the issue persists with a simpler cloze implementation
-
Verify Card Template Code:
- Make sure the JavaScript for handling keyboard shortcuts in your cloze template is intact
- Compare with a known working template
This issue appears to be specific to your setup since we donât see other reports of this exact problem in the community. It might be related to how the keyboard event handling is implemented in your specific card templates or how it interacts with your system.
Would you be able to share:
- Which specific decks/note types youâre using?
- A screenshot of the issue occurring?
- Any error messages in the console (F12) when the problem happens?
This additional information would help us better diagnose and solve your problem.
