Adding Anki cards that everyone already has on their system to an Ankihub deck?

Hello,

There is an Ankihub deck that I maintain that is part of my school. Before ankihub, there were individual decks out there for my schools lecture. I assume that some people subscribed to my school’s ankihub deck also have some of those decks on their system. My question is this, what would happen if I added those lecture decks that are present on some people’s anki software onto the group ankihub deck. How does ankihub handle duplicates. Will it wipe any stuff that is unprotected on the people that already have those lecture specific decks?

AnkiHub handles duplicates like this:

Each card that is created has a specific note ID, for example a number like this “1943912491248”.

If you upload that same deck that your classmates have to ankihub, then they subscribe to it on ankihub, then ankihub will detect that there are two cards with the same note ID and overwrite the old one with the ankihub one

Therefore, if you haven’t altered the card, nothing will really happen to the card.

This is the same way updating to V12 from V11 works, AnkiHub just overwrites the cards with the same note ID’s

If people had notes on old cards they wanted to keep how do I prevent there being any issues with overwriting. Like if they had modifcations to the cards.

They would have to go to the card → right click → click on ankihub protect → select the field they want to protect

This will protect that specific field for that specific card so it won’t be overwritten

If they want to protect, for example, the text field for all cards, they’d have to go to the deck you created on ankihub → manage protected data → select fields they want to protect
