AnKing Deck Has Wrong Tags?

Hey everyone!

I am worried my anking deck has some incorrect setting that has mislabeled which decks certain cards belong in.

It feels too many of the cards are put under the Step 2 deck instead of the “AnKing Step Deck” for my STEP 1 studying. When I suspend a group from a B&B video for example, nearly half the cards will be labeled as under the Step 2 deck.

So I am not sure if I am missing out on content that should really be with my step 1 deck.

This is showing when I do my UWorld as well. I will look up a question ID and bunch of the associated cards will be labeled as under the Step 2 deck when it really is step 1 content.

Am I missing out on cards?? It seems about 15k of the 31k I have in the Anking Deck have the step 2 label and dont show up in my step 1 deck when I unsuspend.

You’re not missing cards; you’re just seeing how the AnKing tagging is designed.

A few key points:

  1. Many cards are tagged for both Step 1 and Step 2

    • A lot of Step 1 content is still relevant for Step 2, so those cards get Step 2/AnKing Step 2 tags as well.
    • It’s normal for a large portion of the deck to carry Step 2–related tags even if the information is Step 1–level.
  2. Deck vs. Tag: what actually controls what you see

    • The deck a card lives in (e.g. your AnKing main deck) is separate from its tags (e.g. AnKing::Step 1, AnKing::Step 2, UWorld::QID 123456).
    • When you “unsuspend your Step 1 deck,” what really matters is which tags or filtered search you used to select cards to unsuspend.
    • A card can:
      • Live in the same physical deck as everything else
      • Have tags for both Step 1 and Step 2
      • Show up in a Step 2–tag search, even though you’ll also see it when you use the Step 1–recommended tag search.
  3. Why your B&B/UWorld cards look “Step 2–heavy”

    • B&B and UWorld tags often hit high‑yield concepts that are also tested on Step 2, so those cards tend to be multi‑tagged.
    • When you search by UWorld QID, Anki shows you the card and all its tags—so it looks like “this is a Step 2 card,” when in reality it may be tagged with Step 1 tags as well.
  4. How to check you’re not missing Step 1 content

    In the Browser:

    • Search something like:
      deck:"AnKing Overhaul" tag:"AnKing Step 1"

      (or whatever your main AnKing deck name is).
    • Compare that count to what the official AnKing Step 1 tag count should be (from the AnKing documentation or the AnkiHub deck description).
    • If the total numbers roughly match, you’re not missing content — it’s just that many cards carry extra Step 2 tags.

    To see if a “Step 2” card is also Step 1–tagged, pick one of the cards you’re worried about and check its tags in the Browser. You’ll likely see something like:

    • AnKing::Step 1
    • AnKing::Step 2
    • UWorld::QID::xxxxxx
    • B_and_B::…
  5. When you would worry something is wrong

    You should only suspect a setup issue if, for example:

    • A card clearly labeled with a Step 1‑only tag is living in a completely different deck than the rest (not just differently tagged).
    • Your total Step 1‑tagged card count is way lower than what’s listed for the current AnKing version.

    If you want, reply with:

    • A screenshot of one “problem” card’s tag list, and
    • The exact search/steps you use to unsuspend Step 1 cards,

    and I can help you confirm whether your setup matches the standard AnKing/AnkiHub configuration or if something actually needs fixing.

Hello,

Step 1 and Step 2 content can have some overlap. If you unsuspend cards under the #AK_Step1_v12 tag, you will get cards for Step 1. Some of them may also have tags for Step 2, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still relevant for Step 1.

Could you please provide more details about the issue you are facing?

For now, please try the following:

  1. Reset local changes. Here’s a tutorial: How to Reset Local Changes
  2. Select the Step 2 tag and send us a screenshot showing how many cards are in it.

I did the reset. I have 25,805 cards labeled under Step 2 as shown above.

The problem is that when im unsuspending by tags after watching a video, a good amount of the cards I unsuspend seem to be labeled as under a “Step 2” deck as shown below. So even when they are unsuspended, these cards do not show up in the main AnKing Step Deck I use.

Great! You are not missing out on any cards.

In the attached screenshot, the selected tag is from the Boards and Beyond resource under the Step 1 tag, not Step 2. Therefore, you can be sure these cards are useful for Step 1. However, I notice there is a deck named “Step 2”. The AnKing Step Deck does not include this deck by default.

The AnKing Step Deck does not have any subdecks by default; it is organized entirely by tags. Unless you had a previous deck or manually created a subdeck, every card with thes AnKing Step Deck tag should be located in the “AnKing Step Deck”. The reason these cards aren’t showing up in the “AnKing Step Deck” is that they are currently located in the deck named “Step 2”.

If you would like to fix this, you can select all cards belonging to the AnKing Step Deck that are currently in other decks and move them to the main AnKing Step Deck. You can follow this tutorial: How to move cards from your old V11 deck to a new deck. You can skip the steps for creating a new deck. Instead, simply select all cards with the note type “AnKingOverhaul (AnKing Step Deck / AnKingMed)” and move them to your existing AnKing Step Deck.
