Cannot get missing images from Anking MCAT to Sync on Mobile

Hello All,

When I study on my computer, the AnKing MCAT deck has all of the information and images—it’s great! However, on my iPhone the Anki app fails to show images for many of the cards. I have tried a lot of solutions, and none of them have worked:

  1. Turned on “sync sounds and images”
  2. deleted the Anki app on my phone and re-downloaded it (3 times now). When I do the initial sync, I leave the app open for a long time to do all of the syncing.
  3. Try and hit the “sync” button over and over again—I have been trying to sync for weeks now on my phone with no success.
  4. Forced a one-way sync upload from my computer and then forced a one-way sync download from my phone.

Interestingly, the Anki app recognizes that I am missing files—when I go to the “check media” section, it shows this text: “Missing files: 1222.” However, in the media sync log, it says “media sync complete.”

I would love some help with this, as it makes my Anki mobile largely useless. Does anyone have a solution or ideas? Thank you!

Hello,

What images are you missing?

All the images or only some?

How much storage do you have left on your device?

I am only missing some of the images—about 500 have downloaded. For example, I was working thru gen chem chapter 5 today and there are three images related to reaction order equations. The graph for the zeroth order reaction was downloaded but not the other two. I cant figure out any rhyme or reason for which are downloaded and which aren’t.

My phone has 107gb of available/free storage.

Especially on mobile devices, it can take quite a while for media to sync. For the mobile app, this also means that you’ll need to have the device unlocked, and Anki open on the screen as well.

If you close the device, or navigate to another app, the syncing process is interrupted. Thus, it can take quite a while, especially for a larger deck, to fully sync.

I have left my phone with Anki open for >1hr before. And when I regularly go to sync, it says “sync complete” and does not leave the spinning wheel indicated here: Media files may take time to sync - Anki FAQs. You can see how it shows “sync complete” in my original post but that when I check images it still shows 1222 missing—I don’t think it is because I haven’t given it enoguh time.

The next thing I would try is, from your laptop/desktop, pushing a one-way sync:

Anki - Preferences - Syncing:

Toggle that option on, then return to the main Anki screen. Click sync, then ‘upload.’

Give that a few seconds to complete.

From there, go back to your mobile device, click sync, and select ‘download.’

This will force a full check and sync, which again could take a good amount of time.

Just as an additional note here:

The number that appears hear, next to ‘Missing files’ won’t be, on its own, a reliable indicator of actual files missing. There’s a longer explanation, but it hews to how Anki records historical media position and the short version is that essentially everyone has a non-zero value there, even when not missing any media.

Let me know how you fare with this, and we’ll go from there.

I meant to say earlier—I found the issue to my problem! My phone had the “sync audio and images too” box checked, but my computer didn’t, and for whatever reason that stopped them from syncing (despite doing a force one-way sync from my computer before, as well as everything else I mentioned). I hope this can help someone else if they run into the same issue!
