Close deletion

Hi there,
I have made the experience, that with cloze deletion I tend to learn to fill the gaps but don’t learn the topic logically.
Is it possible not to use cloze deletion anymore but furthermore ask questions? Studies suggest that receiving information systematically by questions helps to understand and learn topics better than just filling in missing words.

Thank you for considering

Hello,

A few things. You are correct that questions are a useful way to go about learning. This is best exemplified by the use of practice questions in addition to flashcards, either in addition to, or ideally alongside, Anki.

However, there are some options for how you might go about approximating this within Anki as well:

First, depending on the deck you’re using some cards will already be in a question-and-answer format:

Second, conversely if you are making your own cards cloze-deletion style cards can also simply be phrased in question-and-answer format. An example:

Third, if you prefer, classic front-and-back style cards are also an option within Anki:

Lastly, you can also edit any existing cards in a deck that you’re using and re-phrase the card to your liking. This can be done by clicking the ‘Edit’ button in the bottom-right corner of your screen:

From here, you will have access to an edit screen in which you can adjust the phrasing or organization of any of the fields in a given card.

Any, or all of these, are options depending on what you’re hoping to accomplish.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.
