Cloze type not working with the AnKing Deck

I downloaded Anking Step 1 Deck and only cloze 1s are appearing. Anything with a cloze 2, 3, etc do not appear as cards (not even blank, they just don’t generate. If I add a cloze to a card, it won’t generate a new card. When I open the information on the card, it gives me the error, “Cloze deletion can only be used on cloze note types.” The cards are set to these:

Card Type Cloze
Note Type AnKingOverhaul (AnKing Step Deck / AnKingMed)

So I assume it does have the cloze note type? So I’m confused why it isn’t registering as a cloze note type. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This usually happens when the note type isn’t actually a Cloze type anymore, even though it looks like it should be.

Here are the most likely causes and how to fix them:

1. Confirm the note type is truly Cloze

In Anki:

  1. Open Browse.
  2. Find one of the affected notes.
  3. In the right pane, at the top, check:
    • Note type: AnKingOverhaul (AnKing Step Deck / AnKingMed)
  4. Click Cards….
  5. At the top of the Cards window, it should say Cloze (not “Basic” or anything else).

If it doesn’t say “Cloze” as the note type in that Cards window, the note type was accidentally converted to a basic type. That would explain:

  • Only Cloze 1 working.
  • “Cloze deletion can only be used on cloze note types” error.
  • New clozes (e.g., {{c2::}}) not generating new cards.

Fix

If the note type is wrong, the simplest fix is to restore the correct AnKing note types:

  • Re‑add the official AnKing Step Deck (with AnkiHub/AnKingMed), and when importing:
    • Make sure Note Type is set to the official AnKingOverhaul cloze type.
    • Do not allow Anki to rename/merge with some other note type you’ve modified.
  • Alternatively, if you still have the correct AnKingOverhaul note type in your collection:
    1. Select affected notes in Browse.
    2. Go to Notes → Change Note Type…
    3. Choose the correct Cloze-based AnKingOverhaul type.
    4. Map fields appropriately and confirm.

2. Check the template uses cloze: and cloze-only:

If the note type is Cloze but you only see Cloze 1:

  1. In the Cards… window for that note type, look at the templates.
  2. Front template should have things like:
    {{cloze:Text}}

    not just {{Text}}.
  3. There should be multiple card templates (for different clozes) using {{cloze-only:}} / {{cloze:}} as in the official AnKing templates.

If those calls are missing or altered, Anki won’t generate separate cards for c2, c3, etc.

Fix: Restore the original AnKingOverhaul card templates by:

  • Re‑importing the official deck and choosing to update existing note types/templates when prompted, or
  • Manually copying the templates from a fresh profile/deck into your current profile.

3. Make sure you’re using the correct AnKing + AnkiHub setup

Since this is the Anking Step 1 Deck with AnkiHub:

  • Confirm you:
    • Installed the AnkiHub add‑on.
    • Subscribed and synced to the AnKing Step Deck on AnkiHub.
  • If the note types were altered locally, doing an AnkiHub → Update after restoring the proper note type can help bring everything back in sync.

If you’re able to, please reply with:

  • A screenshot of the Cards… window for AnKingOverhaul (AnKing Step Deck / AnKingMed) (showing the top where it says Cloze/Basic and part of the Front template).
  • A screenshot of the exact error message from the card info.

With that, I can tell you exactly whether it’s a note‑type issue, a template issue, or something else specific to your setup.

Hello, I’d be happy to help!

Please make sure you have “Cards” selected here and not “Notes.” If “Notes” is selected, you’ll only be able to see the notes themselves. If “Cards” is selected, you will be able to see each cloze as a separate card.

Could you also please detail when exactly the error happens? If the note type does not support cloze, you wouldn’t even be able to see the first clozes.

Does this also occur with the existing cards in the AnKing Step Deck, or only with the new cards you are creating?

I can confirm that “Cards” is selected instead of “Notes.”

The bottom right is the error that appears.

And this is what appears in the “Cards” section. I have been messing with it quite a bit and if I add a card 2, it first tells me it is identical to card 1 (even if there are multiple cloze). If I change something in the code to make card 1 different from card 2, it does generate the cloze 2, but it also makes a second card for every single card, leading to a lot of blank cards. It also still does not work for cloze 3, 4, etc etc.

I also tried deleting everything and redownloading the deck from AnkiHub, but the issue persists.

Once you change something in the note type’s code, it’s hard for us to diagnose the issue.

Could you please update and reset your note type completely? Here is the step-by-step tutorial to reset and update the AnKing note type:

  1. Download this add-on: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/952691989
  2. After the add-on is installed, please restart Anki.
  3. On your Anki main screen, navigate to AnKing > AnKing Note Types.
  4. Click on the AnKing Overhaul tab. Do not do this for the General tab. First click the option to reset the notetype, and then click to check for updates.
  5. Click Save.

After that, check whether the issue persists.

That did the trick, thank you so much! I appreciate it!
