FSRS Query

Hi! Can I use FSRS without any prior data that are crucial for optimization? I’ve been using Anki for quite some time already, but now that I’m in college, I swept all of my previous decks in high school clean… Will that be okay?

FSRS Query

Hi there! Yes, you can absolutely use FSRS without any prior data for optimization. FSRS comes with default parameters that work well for most users, so you don’t need to worry about not having your old review history.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Default Parameters: FSRS includes pre-configured default parameters that are designed to work well for the average user.

  • Future Optimization: The documentation notes that optimization is only recommended once you’ve accumulated at least 1,000 reviews. As the Anki documentation states:

“If you have less than 1,000 reviews, you can use the default parameters that are already entered into the ‘FSRS parameters’ field. Even with the default parameters, FSRS should work well for most users.”

  • Getting Started: When you enable FSRS in your deck options, the default parameters are automatically applied, so you can start using it right away.

  • Later Optimization: As you use Anki in college and build up your review history, you can optimize the parameters after you reach the 1,000+ review threshold to better fit your personal memory patterns.

So go ahead and start fresh with FSRS for your college studies! The default parameters will serve you well until you’ve built up enough review data for personalized optimization.

What are your recommended settings in the learning steps? I’m not really sure I like the idea of the default setting where good makes the card appear in 5 days. Or is this to be expected?

Hello,

Yes, FSRS is designed with default optimization settings for everyone. As time passes and you optimize it, it will become more efficient by adapting to your review patterns. So, it’s all good!
