Currently the Anking deck under tag: tag:#AK_Step2_v12::#Resources_by_rotation::IM::nbme::form_3 has 3 cards. After I took that form, I tagged a bunch of my own cards with that tag ^ as well as my own tag: tag:MedicineForms::Form3
When I sync with AnkiHub, all of the cards I added to the Step 2 IM Form 3 tag get updated without that tag, which is fine because I can re-add the tag because I have my personal tag, but I am trying to figure out a way that I won’t have to do that anymore, especially as I start my Step 2 studying and want to tag my NBMEs. Whenever I try to add an Anking tag to my protected tags, it doesn’t let me proceed and says ’ Invalid tag name, one of your tags contains “::” ’
So far I’ve got almost every CMS form except Peds tagged like this and it’s super annoying to lose it every time I update (which is one of the main reasons I only update every few months instead of just having a yearly membership).
Any advice on how to proceed or if this is even possible?

Reading: 🔐 Protecting Fields and Tags
Thank you for your question about preserving your custom AnKing tags. This is definitely a common issue that many AnkiHub users face when working with the AnKing deck.
The Issue with Double Colons (:
The error message you’re seeing about invalid tag names containing “::” is because AnkiHub’s protected tags feature doesn’t support hierarchical tags with double colons. This is why you can’t add the AnKing tag #AK_Step2_v12::#Resources_by_rotation::IM::nbme::form_3
to your protected tags list.
Solution: Create Your Own Tag System
Since you’ve already started doing this with your MedicineForms::Form3
tag, you’re on the right track! Here’s a more complete strategy:
- Continue using your personal tag system (like
MedicineForms::Form3
) for all cards you want to track - Automate re-adding the AnKing tags after updates by using Anki’s built-in browser features
How to Re-add Tags After Updates:
- After syncing with AnkiHub, open the Anki browser
- Search for your personal tag (e.g.,
tag:MedicineForms::Form3
) - Select all cards in the search results
- Right-click and choose “Add Tags”
- Add the AnKing tag you want (e.g.,
#AK_Step2_v12::#Resources_by_rotation::IM::nbme::form_3
)
This way, you can quickly restore the AnKing tags to your personally tagged cards after each update.
Alternative: Protect Single Cards
If you only have a few cards with custom tags, you could:
- Find the specific card in the browser
- Right-click and select “AnkiHub: Protect Fields”
- This protects that specific card from being overwritten by updates
However, this approach wouldn’t work well for many cards, and it sounds like you’re dealing with numerous NBME form tags.
Would you be interested in learning more about creating a tagging system that would make re-applying the AnKing tags more efficient? I’d be happy to provide more specific guidance.
Hello,
Can you take a picture of what your tag looks like in Anki? (the full tag string for one of them)
In your protected tags, try adding MedicineForms, that should protect every instance of MedicineForms as a tag in your Anki.
This is an example of the tag I want to save! It is the Anking Step 2 NBME form tag. For forms that don’t have a tag yet, I have been adding them. When I sync to ankihub, the tags I added disappear and ankihub won’t let me protect this tag for example (tag:#AK_Step2_v12::#NBME::Form06)
I currently do have medicine forms protected but I have also added this tag (tag:#AK_Step2_v12::#Resources_by_rotation::IM::nbme::form_3) to cards for Medicine Form 3 which I lose the tag when I sync. So far, I just re tag them after (bc I made my own MedicineForms), but that is getting tedious to do for every subject (I’ve done tags for all forms like this except Peds) especially now that I am getting into my dedicated and trying to study with filtered decks using these nbme tags.
