Issues with FSRS when it comes to Sentence Mining in Language Learning

Sentence Mining is looking for vocabulary outside of Anki to make anki cards out of (in this specific scenario) i’ve found the issue is because i saw the thing I’m mining fairly recently, it’s new in my head and when i make an Anki card for it, FSRS launches it 1.5 months into the future after i hit “good” just twice in a row, even though I’m not gonna recall it 1.5 months into the future

Why FSRS jumps so far ahead

FSRS isn’t just looking at how many times you pressed Good; it models how “easy” the card appears right now:

• When you mine a sentence you just encountered, it’s artificially easy in the short term.
• You remember it well on the first couple reviews → FSRS infers high stability → interval jumps to weeks/months.
• But that “ease” is inflated by recency/context, so 1.5 months is too optimistic.

This is expected behavior from FSRS… but not desirable for sentence-mined language content.

Things you can do in practice

1. Use a shorter maximum interval (per deck)

For your sentence-mining deck(s):

1. Go to the Deck Options for that deck.
2. Under FSRS / Maximum Interval, set a much smaller value for now, e.g.:
   • 30 or 45 days instead of many months/years.

This caps how far FSRS is allowed to jump, even if it thinks the card is very stable.

2. Lower the requested retention for that deck

High target retention (e.g. 90–95%) + recent exposure can cause big jumps.

In the FSRS options for that deck:

• Try setting Requested retention to something like 0.85 or 0.8 for sentence cards.
• This makes the scheduler more conservative.

3. Treat mined sentences more like “learning” than “mature”

For fresh-mined content, you can:

• Keep them in a separate deck (e.g. “Mining – New”) with:
  • Shorter maximum interval.
  • Lower retention or stricter caps.
• After they’ve stabilized (you feel comfortable), move them to your main deck with more generous settings.

This prevents brand‑new mined sentences from getting mature‑card intervals immediately.

4. Use manual interval control when needed

If FSRS gives you a 1.5‑month jump that you know is too long:

• The next time you see it, press “Hard” or even “Again” intentionally just to pull the interval back down.
• Or manually reschedule that card (right‑click → Reschedule, or use the browser) to something like 5–10 days.

Do this sparingly, but it’s fine to override FSRS when your intuition clearly disagrees.

How this relates to AnkiHub

If you’re using an AnkiHub-shared deck and doing your own sentence mining on top:

• Keep your personal mining deck separate from the AnkiHub deck, so you can:
  • Use your own FSRS settings (shorter max interval, different retention).
  • Avoid conflicting expectations with the shared settings/content.
• The AnkiHub deck can keep more standard FSRS parameters; your mining deck is your “experimental” or “intensive” one.

Should I just turn off FSRS? I like having my sentence mined cards in my main deck as well so it’d be inconvenient for that to effect my other cards as well, But i sometimes like when it launches certain cards into the future but not for some others

I would be happy to help.

I can’t say that I’m familiar with sentence mining, though it shouldn’t directly have any impact on FSRS one way or the other. If FSRS is suggesting intervals that aren’t to your liking, you can adjust your desired retention (al things being equal, higher retentions will involve shorter intervals) and optimize or reset your parameters; those are about the only options, really

Each can be adjusted from your deck settings menu, as here:

Of note: if your parameters are already optimized, then optimizing them again may not change much (if they are already optimal, then the intervals you’re seeing are FSRS’s best determination of what they should be).

Resetting the parameters will, perhaps obviously, reset your parameters. This may lead to FSRS performing worse in the near term, as it will have to ‘re-learn’ your review history.

Desired retention is, well, it’s the retention you desire.
