May 2025 Malleus Clinical Medicine (AU/NZ) Update

Hey everyone!

As the middle of the year approaches, we thought we’d update you again on some of the behind the scene progress on the Malleus deck.

:books: Deck Updates

  • Total updates (accepted suggestions) in the last 30 days: 967
  • Deck Stats: 3800+ cards
  • New Malleus Note-type - Official Launch
    • :television: Watch the launch video on YouTubeWatch the playlist
    • Coinciding with the release of this e-newsletter, we have distributed our new MalleusCM - Cloze note-type, which completely overhauls our existing design and colour scheme
    • It has been designed to work across and tested on Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android and Linux (although bugs may emerge - please get in touch with us)
    • We have mapped our new note-type off this style guide; catppuccin/docs/style-guide.md at main · catppuccin/catppuccin · GitHub
    • The note-type allows for customisation, similar to the AnKing Overhaul note-type many users will be familiar with, with defaults to allow for automatic “flip to back” on One-by-One cards once all clozes are revealed, showing tags by default and colour customisation
    • Importantly many of these options can be turned on and off per device (e.g. turned on for Anki desktop and iOS Ankimobile but off for Anki web and Ankidroid)
  • New randomisation feature (Malleus exclusive release)
    • Our new note-type (briefly showcased in our March newsletter) has a unique randomisation feature developed by @sabicool which requires no additional add-ons to work, and allows for the easy creation of cards that use a local randomisation seed to render values when studying on Anki
    • This provides unique opportunities to study cards on topics like GCS, VBG interpretation, BMD interpretation, dermatology etc. and efficiently apply clinical knowledge to common scenarios without memorising the content of cards (and with less card burden)
    • We are still tagging existing cards as potential “randomisation candidates” under #Malleus_CM::!TO_DO!::Randomisation_Candidate and approved cards developed using this feature can easily be found under #Malleus_CM::#Card_Feature::Randomisation
    • Creating these cards is easy using the Malleus Anki Add-on (see below GIFs)
    • Malleus Anki-add on randomisation feature
    • GIF randomisation demo
  • New topics include:

  • We also have a backlog of new cards that have been submitted to the deck, as well as suggested changes which are being processed by our team of Maintainers
  • You can always check the full list of the updates by clicking on the ‘AnkiHub’ → ‘Updated Since Last Review’ button on the upper left hand side of the browser within Anki

:trophy: Introducing the Malleus Cup

Thank you to the dedicated pool of volunteer contributors who constantly improve the Malleus deck, whether that be through commenting on suggestions, submitting changes to cards and especially those creating new cards on topics that are currently lacking in the Malleus deck! :tada:

This year to encourage more submissions from new collaborators, we will be keeping a leaderboard going for contributions (excluding the core Malleus Executive).

There will be 1 point awarded for every 20 accepted change-note suggestions and 1 point per every 5 accepted note-type suggestions submitted from deck creation. This data will be publicly sourced from: Statistics for Maintainers · Metabase. It will display in the format of name : total score (x + y), with x referring to points given for new note approvals and y the points calculated for change note approvals.

:trophy:Current leaderboard score (as of May 31, 2025)

  1. @braviboron : 75 (61+14) :trophy:
  2. @mrvhyte : 41 (26+15)
  3. @PlateletPhD : 13 (11+2)
  4. @cthulhudagod : 7 (6+1)
  5. @arnothkn : 1 (0+1)

At exactly (7) days prior to our first AGM planned to held in September this year (date to be confirmed), the ‘Malleus Cup’ will be awarded to the contributor with the highest total score calculated from approved suggestions, and will receive:

  1. A AUD$100 Visa gift card (we will ship this out to you) and;
  2. An official written award for CV purposes and;
  3. A public acknowledgement on our website/social media (with permission).

At this stage, this competition will run for 2025 only, and the winner will be contacted via AnkiHub community for details.

:link: Partnerships & Collaboration

  • Expanded MedSoc Relationships
    • We recently presented our work to the Presidents of all MedSocs across Australia to expand Malleus’ reach into local MedSocs. The aim is to ideally develop local connections and users to help tailor the Malleus deck to the unique curriculum delivery of different universities.
    • If you are at a university and want to get involved, please get in contact - we are always looking for local representation.
  • eMedici Partnership
    • Our Executive has recently been in renewed discussions with eMedici, who have kindly provided an in-kind account to our team to accelerate the creation of cards into Malleus tagged according to their pre-clinical and clinical medicine MCQ bank.
    • Please contact us if you would like to get involved with this aspect of the project of converting eMedici questions into Malleus cards.
  • AMSA Med Ed
    • We have onboarded two AMSA x Malleus Liaison Officers, who we look forward to introducing to our Executive and helping out with the aims of the project.

Thanks! We will make a post about the new note type and randomisation in the wider reddit ankimedschool subreddit community as we think it would benefit other anki decks as well.
