My lecture note section is getting erased on the ankistep deck

Don’t know what’s going on , ill add info on various topics in the lecture note section but i’ve noticed it’s getting erased. its pretty annoying. Do i have to manually add the protected fields tag for each card for this not to happen? Also a side note i think would be useful for anki in general. i like to highlight/bold the ‘extra’ text underneath the cards and it would be nice if when i synced my anki this wasn’t changed as well.

Hello,

For this first issue, you just need to protect the Lecture Note field on the AnkiHub webpage. Follow this tutorial, and you’ll be all set.

How AnkiHub works: When a field receives an update and you sync, the field will be updated unless it is protected. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to both protect your changes in the Extra field and receive updates. You can either protect an entire field so it won’t receive updates or leave it unprotected so it can receive updates.

Let me know if this helps!

If i add a tag as well, will clicking the lecture box only apply to notes with the applied tag? or will it apply to all cards regardless

If you add a tag to an individual card it will only apply to the card to which you added the tag.

Fields can be protected individually (Protect Field for Individual Note), or globally (Managing Protected Fields) based on your preferences and what you’re hoping to do

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

yep. so just to confirm even if i don’t manually add the tag to the card, if i have the lecture notes selected anki won’t delete that info

I’m not sure if I follow. If you have Lecture Notes selected from what?

If you don’t manually add a tag, and don’t otherwise protect a field, it is possible for a field to be overwritten by AnkiHub.

Just to recap:

  • If you protect a field for an individual card by adding a tag (or by using the tutorial above), the field, or fields, you have opted to protect will be protected for that individual card.
  • If you protect a field for all notes in your collection (by using the other tutorial above), that field, or fields, you have opted to protect will be protected for all cards in your collection.

From the tutorial you sent, the check box for lecture notes, if that is on do i need to add the tag as well to the card for the lecture notes section to not be deleted. Only reason i’m clarifying is because this is how my anki has been and i’ve noticed some lecture notes i’ve added aren’t there any more.

Just to be sure: which tutorial? There are check-boxes in both.

But: if you’ve otherwise protected a field via one method, you don’t have to then protect it via a second method.

As long as a field is protected, there isn’t any way for AnkiHub to overwrite them. It’s hard to give any broad proclamations beyond that without knowing more about your collection and history but, in all likelihood, if material has been removed from those fields it’s typically unlikely to have been via AnkiHub (both because AnkiHub doesn’t write to that particular field basically ever, and doubly so if you’ve had it protected).

In cases like that, it’s usually a culprit of discrepancies in syncing between multiple collections (like a separate device, mobile or similar) or perhaps a server error with Anki or something. As long as that field is protected, there’s not much AnkiHub is able to do to that field so it may be worth investigating other potential causes (typically related to Anki, maybe AnkiWeb, cross-syncing, other stuff).
