Lecture Notes protected field erased?

Hi,

All the images/screenshots I seemed to have put in all my lecture notes for most cards seems to have disappeared despite the field being protected… I’m missing the info for hundreds and hundreds of cards?? What’s the deal with this? Nothing has changed with my protected fields or account or anything. Would really like to get those back as over a year of work of inserting pics/screenshots is gone and that’s a huge pain for me to manually do that all over again…

I understand you’re experiencing a concerning issue with your lecture notes where the images and screenshots have disappeared from protected fields. This is definitely frustrating, especially with so much work involved. Let me search for relevant information to help you.

Hi there! I understand how frustrating it can be to lose important images in your lecture notes, especially after putting in so much work. Let’s try to figure out what happened and how to possibly recover them.

Understanding the Issue

Based on your description, you had images in your Lecture Notes field (which should be protected by default in AnkiHub) that have disappeared, despite the field being protected.

Possible Causes & Solutions

  1. Protection Status Check
The Lecture Notes field is typically automatically protected in AnkiHub (especially for decks like AnKing Step Deck), but it’s worth verifying your protection settings:

    • Go to the AnkiHub website
    • Find your deck and click the 3 dots in the top right
    • Select “Manage protected data”
    • Confirm that “Lecture Notes” is checked (ticked)
  2. Media Sync Issues
Sometimes media can disappear due to sync issues:

    • Check if the AnkiHub add-on is still downloading media (it may show “Idle” when complete)
    • Try forcing a full sync by going to Tools → Preferences → Network → “On next sync, force changes in one direction”
  3. Local Changes Reset
If someone accidentally reset local changes, this could overwrite protected fields:

    • Check if anyone else has access to your account or if you might have accidentally clicked “Reset local changes” in the AnkiHub add-on
  4. Recovering Images
If your images were stored locally:

    • Check your Anki media folder to see if the image files still exist
    • You might be able to recover from Anki backups if the issue is recent

Next Steps

  1. If you believe this is a bug with AnkiHub (especially since the field was protected), please provide additional details like:

    • Which specific deck you’re using
    • When you first noticed the images disappeared
    • Any recent changes to your Anki setup or AnkiHub subscription
  2. As a last resort, you might need to check your computer backup if you have one, or see if you still have the original images that you can re-add.

Have you made any recent changes to your Anki setup or AnkiHub subscription? And could you confirm which deck these notes belong to?

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

You can always restore your collection by restoring from a backup:

Anki makes backups, periodically, and automatically, numerous times per day from which you can always draw.

Please let me know if that answers your question, and if there’s anything else I can help with.

I suppose that’s a temporary fix for the issue, but why did they disappear in the first place if they’re protected?

Also perhaps relatedly… but thousands of tagged cards/notes from an optional deck are missing…
For example… there should be thousands of cards in this optional tag. there are only 5 now for whatever reason?

This is a rare bug that happens and we are trying to investigate the root cause. Can you do the following? This might help us down the line:

Please use AnkiHub > Help > Upload logs and data and let us know the filename shown.

I already reverted to a prior back up from ~May this year to get back my cards – all Lecture Notes fields and all the optional tagged cards returned obviously. Do you still want the log file now that i’ve reverted?

@abdo.nh Let us know if it would still be helpful

Yes please.
