Not an ankihub question but hoping to get help for FSRS

I have been doing anki for a couple years now, recently decided to switch to FSRS after learning about it.

The retention rate is set at .95.

The problem I have is that I see a card for the first time and the easy interval is 17 days.

I know for sure I won’t remember the card in 17 days. Can I switch it that interval after the first review and then after that FSRS can take over according to its algorithm?

I’ll help you understand how FSRS works with new cards and the “Easy” button behavior. Let me search for some relevant information first.

Hi Doctoratta100,

While this isn’t directly AnkiHub-related, I can help with your FSRS question:

Your issue is related to the FSRS retention setting. You’ve set it quite high at 0.95 (95%), which is likely why you’re seeing such long initial intervals.

Understanding what’s happening:

The 0.95 retention rate means FSRS is trying to schedule cards so you have a 95% chance of remembering them when they come up for review again. This is higher than the default of 0.90 (90%), which results in more frequent reviews and longer intervals for Easy ratings.

Recommendations:

  1. Lower your desired retention: Between 0.85-0.90 is typically recommended for most users. At 0.95, you’re asking for significantly more frequent reviews.

  2. Use learning steps effectively: For new cards, use the learning phase (pressing “Good” instead of “Easy”) to build initial familiarity before letting FSRS take over with longer intervals.

  3. Don’t press Easy for new material: If you know you won’t remember a card in 17 days, simply press “Good” instead of “Easy”. The “Easy” button is designed to immediately convert a card into a review card, even if steps remain.

  4. Adjust your workflow: For new cards, consider going through all the learning steps first (pressing “Good”), which gives you multiple exposures to the card before it graduates to review status.

Remember that with FSRS, learning steps shorter than 1 day are recommended to let the algorithm properly calculate optimal intervals based on your performance.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions about FSRS in Anki.

I don’t believe so, no, unfortunately. FSRS does not allow for control of the easy interval, really.

If the easy interval is 17 days and you won’t remember it in 17 days, you might prefer to use a different answer option. Or, hit 17 days and get it wrong and allow FSRS to adjust over time (as it does)

Thank you
