Not being able to sync notes and decks with my friend

Hey!

My friend and I started a collaborative Deck. He is the owner, I am a maintainer. We can edit existing cards with a full sync but we cannot add new notes.

We are doing the following steps:

  1. Add new note and click on suggest to AnkiHub.
  2. We accept the suggestion on the website.
  3. The new notes are available on the Ankihub website
  4. We do a full sync with our decks but the new notes don’t appear in the app. This also applies to new Subdecks.

What are we doing wrong? Please help us

I’ll help you troubleshoot this syncing issue with your collaborative deck on AnkiHub. Let me search for relevant information about this problem.

Solving the New Notes Not Appearing Issue in AnkiHub

Hi Micha! It sounds like you’re having trouble with new notes not appearing in your collaborative deck with your friend. This is a common issue, and I can help you troubleshoot.

The Missing Step: Download Changes from AnkiHub

Based on your description, you’re correctly suggesting new notes and accepting them on the website, but you’re missing a crucial step after the full sync. After your notes appear on the AnkiHub website, you need to specifically download the changes from AnkiHub to your local Anki.

Here’s the complete workflow that should work:

  1. Add new notes and click “Suggest to AnkiHub” ✓
  2. Accept the suggestions on the website ✓
  3. Verify the new notes are available on the AnkiHub website ✓
  4. In Anki, go to the AnkiHub add-on menu and select “Download Changes from AnkiHub”
  5. After downloading changes, perform a full sync with AnkiWeb if needed

The “Download Changes from AnkiHub” step is what brings the accepted suggestions from the AnkiHub server into your local Anki collection.

Additional Troubleshooting Tips:

If you’ve tried the above and are still having issues:

  • Make sure both you and your friend have the latest version of the AnkiHub add-on
  • Try restarting Anki after downloading changes
  • Ensure you’re both using the same note types for your collaborative deck
  • Check if there are any sync conflicts that might be preventing new notes from appearing

Let me know if this resolves your issue or if you need further assistance!

I cannot find said option. I don’t think it exists.

I’m sorry for providing incorrect information. Let me search for the correct procedure to get your new notes to appear in Anki.

Resolving New Notes Not Appearing in AnkiHub Collaborative Deck

Hi Micha! I understand your frustration with new notes not appearing in your collaborative deck despite following the suggestion process correctly.

The Solution: Syncing with AnkiHub

Based on the official AnkiHub documentation, the correct workflow for adding new notes to a collaborative deck is:

  1. Add new note and click on “Suggest to AnkiHub” ✓
  2. Accept the suggestion on the website ✓
  3. The new notes are available on the AnkiHub website ✓
  4. Sync with AnkiHub using the AnkiHub add-on menu

The crucial step you’re missing is to specifically sync with AnkiHub after accepting suggestions on the website. This is different from the regular Anki sync with AnkiWeb.

How to Sync with AnkiHub:

  1. In Anki, look for the AnkiHub add-on menu at the top of the screen
  2. Click on “Sync with AnkiHub” (or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+h)
  3. Wait for the sync to complete

According to the AnkiHub Add-on Menu documentation, this “will sync all subscribed decks to AnkiHub” which should bring in your new notes.

Additional Troubleshooting:

If you’ve tried syncing with AnkiHub and still don’t see your new notes:

  1. Check your add-on version: Make sure you have the latest version of the AnkiHub add-on
  2. Check media sync status: Look at the Media Sync option in the AnkiHub menu to see if it’s still downloading
  3. Restart Anki: Sometimes a simple restart after syncing can help
  4. Reset local changes: In extreme cases, you might need to browse in Anki → click on the AnkiHub addon tab → press “reset all local changes”

Let me know if syncing with AnkiHub resolves your issue or if you need further assistance!

we did that a thousand times. it’s not working

I understand this is frustrating. Let me dive deeper into your issue with new notes not appearing despite multiple syncs with AnkiHub.

More Targeted Troubleshooting for AnkiHub Sync Issues

Based on your comments, it sounds like you’re following all the standard procedures correctly, but still experiencing sync problems. Let’s try some more specific approaches:

1. Verify Proper Note Suggestion Process

When suggesting a note to AnkiHub:

  • Make sure you’re selecting the card you want to suggest
  • Right-click and specifically choose “Suggest a new note”
  • Confirm the suggestion appears on the AnkiHub website under pending suggestions
  • After accepting on the website, verify it shows in the deck on the website

2. Check AnkiHub Log Files

Your sync issues might be documented in the log files:

  • Go to AnkiHub add-on menu → Help → Upload Logs
  • This will generate log files that might reveal what’s happening
  • You can also check the log directly in your Anki profile folder

3. Try Resetting Local Changes

Sometimes local conflicts can prevent new notes from appearing:

  • Open the browser in Anki
  • Click on the AnkiHub add-on tab
  • Select “Reset all local changes”
  • Then sync with AnkiHub again

4. Subdeck-Specific Issues

Since you mentioned subdecks not appearing:

  • Verify the “Enable Subdecks” option is checked in Deck Management
  • Make sure subdecks use proper AnkiHub_Subdeck tags

5. Check Destination for New Cards

In the AnkiHub add-on menu:

  • Go to Deck Management
  • Select your collaborative deck
  • Verify the “Destination for New cards” setting is correct

If you’ve tried all these steps and are still having issues, this might be a more complex bug that requires direct assistance from AnkiHub support. I recommend posting the exact error messages you’re seeing or any unusual behavior to help them diagnose the problem more effectively.

Hi @micha.v,

Just to confirm, resetting local changes does not fix this issue correct?

Can you take a screenshot of the new card you’ve uploaded? Are the “suggest a change” greyed out or available to click on for that new card you suggested and accepted?

I don’t understand how to reset local changes. Does my friend have to do that aswell?

If the cards are not appearing for both of you, then yes, resetting local changes will help. Here’s a tutorial on how to do this: Resetting Local Changes

Okay thank you, we did that. Now what?

The cards still haven’t synced. He doesn’t see my notes in the app but they are available online.

Can you take a screenshot of the new card you’ve uploaded? Are the “suggest a change” buttons greyed out or available to click on for that new card you suggested and accepted?

This is a Screenshot of the card. We figured out that we can now see the cards but not new subdecks, that either of us add to the main deck. Can this issue be fixed or should we just create every sundeck in advance?

The note I added was just added to the Main Deck. But we need a lot of subdecks for individual lectures.

If you’ve suggested the proper tags for the subdecks and accepted the changes.

Go to Browse → at the top click on AnkiHub → rebuild subdecks. See if that populates the new subdecks for both of you
