Whenever I turn on text-to-speech, it will only remain on until I turn anki off and back on. This also happens with having hints automatically open. Essentially, everything that I change is reset each time that I restart anki.

Is there a simpler way?
Both routes are pretty simple. The one you found is one way, the other is to use the Anking Note Types addon (which has other functionality and other benefits).
But, if it works it works.
