Smart Search Just Got Smarter

We’ve rebuilt Smart Search from the ground up. And, with help from our Beta testers, we’re ready to release this to all Premium AnkiHub users. Let’s recap :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Smart Search is the lecture-to-flashcards shortcut you’re missing. This premium feature helps you study the right cards faster, with way less time spent searching. It doesn’t matter what you’re working from - text, a lecture PDF, PPT, or YouTube link - Smart Search finds every flashcard that matches right away.

So here’s what’s new:

:white_check_mark: A brand-new AI engine under the hood — we rebuilt the search foundation, and it now works the way you would: it parses your material, figures out the topics you need, runs search after targeted search, and double-checks every card before it makes your list. The old search engine matched your text against cards in a single pass — fine for specific terms, but it could miss the bigger picture and let look-alike cards slip through. The new one finds far more of the right cards, way fewer of the wrong ones — and it’s how Smart Search can now tell you, with confidence, when a topic has no matching cards at all. We’ve been building this for over a year, and we didn’t ship it until it cleared our quality bar with real beta testers.

:white_check_mark: One search box for everything — paste text, upload your lecture slides (PDF, PPT/PPTX), or drop in a YouTube link

:white_check_mark: Results organized by topic — matching cards are grouped by the topics found in your material, with page ranges shown for files

:white_check_mark: Gap detection — see which topics have no matching cards, so you know exactly what to study elsewhere

:white_check_mark: A cleaner interface — filters for Relevance, USMLE Step, and Resources; Compact/Detailed views; and Copy/Study actions that stay on screen

:hammer: How to try it

  • As a premium user, open Smart Search from your deck page on the web, or from the AnkiHub add-on.
  • As a core user, this is available during a 1-week trial. Follow the same directions and open Smart Search from your deck page on the web, or from the AnkiHub add-on.
  • Paste text, attach a file, or paste a YouTube link.
  • That’s it!

Figuring out what to review and hunting cards costs learners too much time. Smart Search does the leg work and connects you to the right cards, immediately. For you, this means less time searching more time studying with Anki!

Happy studying :heart_hands:
