Sync problem

Hi, everyone. I’m kinda stumped here. When I try to sync I get this error:

I reviewed posts about this issue in several places and have attempted everything I could find/

I have exported the entire collection, I made a deck with a single card to try force the sync, and I deleted it on Ankiweb, and it shows me this:

I have used check database and check media multiple times with minimal effect. My current Anki decks are:

If relevant, I am on a mac and I have Anki version ⁨25.09.4 (d52ca669)⁩. Would appreciate any guidance

That error is coming from AnkiWeb, not AnkiHub: your collection.anki2 file is larger than AnkiWeb’s hard limit (about 300 MB uncompressed). Media size (8+ GB) is not the problem here; it’s the collection file itself.

For AnkiHub, you actually don’t need AnkiWeb sync to work, but it’s still nice to fix if you can. Here’s how I’d approach it:

1. Find out what is making the collection so big

On your Mac:

  1. In Anki, go to Tools → Add-ons → View Files for any large deck add-ons if you suspect them (but usually it’s not add-ons).
  2. More directly:
    • Close Anki.
    • In Finder, go to:
      ~/Library/Application Support/Anki2/
    • Open your profile folder (often called User 1).
    • Check the size of:
      • collection.anki21 (or collection.anki2)
      • collection.media folder (this doesn’t affect the AnkiWeb limit, just for context).

If collection.anki21 is huge, it’s usually due to one or more of:

  • Very large text fields (e.g. PDFs or long notes pasted in).
  • A massive number of notes in one or more decks.
  • Add-ons that stored data in note fields.

2. Shrink the collection file

Try these steps in this order, checking if you can sync after each one:

A. Empty the cards trash

  • Browse → Cards → Delete → Empty (and also check the ā€œNotesā€ trash if present).
  • Then run Tools → Check Database.
  • Try sync.

B. Delete or archive very large / unused decks

For decks you don’t really need directly in this profile (e.g. old unsuspended Qbanks or experimental decks):

  1. Export them:
    • Right-click deck → Export.
    • Choose ā€œInclude scheduling infoā€ only if you really need it.
  2. After export, delete those decks from the collection.
  3. Run Tools → Check Database again.
  4. Try syncing.

You can always re-import those .apkg files later if needed.

C. Look for ā€œmonsterā€ notes

  1. In the Browse window, sort by:
    • Fields or Card columns, and look for any cards with:
      • Huge pasted text.
      • Images somehow stored as text (base64).
  2. Consider:
    • Moving large content to external files (PDFs/notes app) and leaving just a short summary + link in Anki.
    • Deleting truly unnecessary notes.

Then Check Database again and retry sync.

3. How this affects AnkiHub

AnkiHub sync is independent from AnkiWeb, so:

  • You can still:
    • Sync AnkiHub decks (AnKing, etc.) using the AnkiHub add-on.
    • Get updates, push changes, etc.
  • AnkiWeb just won’t be able to host this profile until the collection size is below the limit.

If you’re mainly using AnkiHub and don’t rely much on AnkiWeb (e.g. you study only on one computer + iOS/Android with AnkiHub decks), you can keep working in Anki while you slowly trim the collection.

4. If you want more targeted help

If you’re okay sharing more details, you can reply with:

  • Approximate size of collection.anki21.
  • Rough counts from Tools → Stats → Collection (total notes / cards).
  • Whether any decks contain pasted articles, slides, or PDFs.

From there I can suggest a more specific ā€œwhat to delete/archive firstā€ plan that should get you under the AnkiWeb limit with minimal disruption to your AnkiHub decks.

I don’t have this under application support

Hello,

You likely have issues with one of these decks. The AnKing Step Deck and Dermki probably aren’t the problem because they are maintained by the AnkiHub team and other users would have reported an issue by now, unless you made some changes locally.

The recommendation to export your decks is the way to go, but you need to delete them after exporting. The exporting step is just to ensure you have them backed up. You can try exporting and then deleting the decks you don’t use to see if you can sync afterward. Looking at your collection, it appears you still have all of your decks.

Just so I understand, you exported and deleted everything, meaning the only existing thing in your Anki is that single card, and even then you couldn’t sync? If you haven’t deleted anything yet, it is expected that the issue didn’t go away.

I deleted everything and the size of the file has not changed:

Please do the following:

  1. Go to Tools> Check Media > Delete Unused
  2. Tools > Check Database
  3. Go to Preferences > Syncing > check the ā€œOn next sync, force changes in one directionā€ box
  4. Click Sync and choose ā€œUpload to AnkiWebā€

I followed those instructions and some of the decks reappeared:

Now you can try to import the decks you exported earlier.
