Sync without the card templates changing

I am having the issue that when I sync with AnkiHub, the changes I made to the templates of the cards are reset. While I am aware this is the nature of syncing, I would like to stop this from happening because the native template of the Anking deck frustrates and annoys me to no end.

When you sync a shared AnkiHub deck, the note types (including card templates) are kept in sync with the deck owner. So what you’re seeing—your custom template changes getting reverted—is expected behavior for subscribed decks like AnKing.

To keep your own template changes, you have a few options:

1. Turn off syncing of that Note Type (Recommended if you want to stay subscribed)

You can stay on AnkiHub for content (new cards, updates, fixes) but stop AnkiHub from touching the templates:

  1. In Anki, go to Tools → Add‑ons → AnkiHub → Config.
  2. Look for the setting that controls whether note types / templates are synced (wording may be like “sync note types” or “update note types”).
  3. Disable syncing of note types for that deck / globally (depending on what the config offers).
  4. Restart Anki.
  5. Re‑apply your preferred template changes one last time.

From then on, AnkiHub will still sync card content and tags, but your template layout should remain as you set it.

If you don’t see a clear option for disabling note type syncing, let me know exactly which AnkiHub config options you see and I can help you pick the right one.

2. Use a separate custom note type (More advanced)

If you really want to be “template‑independent”:

  1. Duplicate the AnKing note type (in Anki: Tools → Manage Note Types → select → Clone).
  2. Edit that cloned note type’s templates to your liking.
  3. Change your cards to use this new note type (e.g., with the Change Note Type tool).
  4. Keep the original AnkiHub‑linked note type only for future subscriptions/updates, or unsubscribe once everything you care about is in your custom version.

Drawback: once you move cards off the AnkiHub‑linked note type, those specific cards won’t receive further AnkiHub updates.

3. Unsubscribe from the AnkiHub deck

If you don’t care about any future AnkiHub updates:

  • You can unsubscribe from the AnkiHub deck.
  • After unsubscribing, change templates as you like; they will no longer be overwritten.

If you tell me:

  • Which Anki version you’re on, and
  • Whether you’re using the main AnKing Overhaul deck from AnkiHub,

I can give more step‑by‑step instructions tailored to your exact setup.

These are the config options:

Thanks for posting the config; that helps.

Those options show you’re using the standard AnkiHub add‑on config, which currently does not expose a toggle for disabling note type / template syncing. So the “turn off note‑type sync in the config” solution I suggested earlier isn’t available in your version.

Given that, your realistic options are:

Option A – Make a custom note type (most practical)

This keeps you subscribed to AnkiHub for content, but lets you fully control templates on (a copy of) your cards.

  1. In Anki, go to Tools → Manage Note Types.
  2. Find the AnKing (or whatever AnkiHub‑linked) note type you’re using.
  3. Select it and click Clone (or Add → Clone in some versions).
  4. Give the clone a clear name, e.g. My AnKing Custom.
  5. With the cloned note type selected, click Cards… and freely edit the templates (front/back, styling, etc.).
  6. Now change your cards to the cloned note type:
    • In the browser, select the cards you want to “free” from AnkiHub templates.
    • Click Notes → Change Note Type.
    • Choose:
      • From: the original AnkiHub note type.
      • To: your new My AnKing Custom note type.
    • Map fields as needed and confirm.

From that point on:

  • Those moved cards will not receive future template updates from AnkiHub.
  • They also typically won’t get note‑type–specific structural updates from AnkiHub (e.g., new fields / template changes).
  • They can still live in the same deck and be reviewed normally.

You can keep a smaller subset of cards on the original AnkiHub note type if you still want them to receive official updates.

Option B – Unsubscribe from the AnkiHub deck

If you truly don’t want any future updates:

  1. In Anki, open Tools → AnkiHub (or the AnkiHub menu).
  2. Go to the section listing your Subscribed Decks.
  3. Unsubscribe from the AnKing (or other) deck.
  4. Then freely edit the original note type’s templates—nothing will revert them anymore.

Drawback: no more AnkiHub fixes, new cards, or tag updates for that deck.

Because there’s no current config flag for template sync in your install, Option A (cloned note type) is usually the best balance: you keep AnkiHub for what you want, and escape its templates where they bother you.

If you tell me:

  • The exact note type name you see (e.g., “AnKing Overhaul v12” or similar), and
  • Roughly how many cards you want to move to your custom template,

I can outline very specific step‑by‑step instructions for your case (including safe field‑mapping).

If I do option A then will I still be able to sync the cards for the information even though the card structure will not be updated?

Reading: Sync without the card templates changing

Short answer: no—once you move a card to a cloned (custom) note type, that specific card will no longer receive AnkiHub updates for its information/content.

Here’s the more precise breakdown:

  • AnkiHub tracks cards by their note type + internal IDs on the AnkiHub‑linked note type.
  • When you use Change Note Type to move notes to your cloned My AnKing Custom type:
    • Those notes are now “yours only.”
    • AnkiHub won’t push future edits to:
      • Fields (e.g. updated wording, added facts)
      • Tags
      • New fields
      • Templates

So Option A trades ongoing AnkiHub updates for full control over templates on those cards.

Because of that, many people do a mix:

  • Keep some cards on the original AnkiHub note type (keep getting all updates, including templates).
  • Move a subset (the ones whose layout really bothers you) to a custom cloned note type for permanent template freedom, knowing those won’t update via AnkiHub anymore.

If you tell me roughly:

  • How many cards you’d want on the custom layout, and
  • Whether you care more about up‑to‑date content or having your own template,

I can suggest a concrete strategy (e.g., which subset to move and how to keep the rest updating smoothly).

So then those options also do not work.

You’re right to notice the problem: given how AnkiHub currently works, both of those “solutions” come with a big trade‑off:

  • Stay on the AnkiHub note type → you keep all updates, but your template edits get overwritten.
  • Move to a cloned/custom note type → you keep your template, but you lose AnkiHub updates for those notes.

There isn’t a built‑in way right now to:

Keep getting AnkiHub content/field/tag updates while completely opting out of template/note‑type changes

…for the same notes.

So in practice you’re forced to choose what you care about more for a given set of cards:

  1. Prioritize updates (content fixes, tag updates, new fields)
→ Keep them on the original AnkiHub note type and tolerate/adjust to the official templates.

  2. Prioritize full control over layout/templates
→ Move them to a cloned note type and accept that these won’t auto‑update from AnkiHub anymore.

A lot of users end up doing a compromise like:

  • Only move the most annoying cards / a specific subset (e.g., certain tags or subdecks) to a custom note type.
  • Keep the rest on the AnkiHub note type to continue getting updates.

If you’d like, tell me:

  • Roughly how many cards you want on your custom layout, and
  • Whether you’re mainly using AnKing or another AnkiHub deck,

and I can help you design a practical compromise (for example: “move only these tags/subdecks, keep the rest updating”).

Any changes to the templates should ideally be made after the ANKIHUB_END section at the end of the text. This tells AnkiHub to avoid overwriting your changes.

If possible, install the AnKing Note Types add-on and customize the template through it. Actually, just having the add-on installed will prevent AnkiHub from touching your template, though you need to be mindful of the possibility of the note types add-on also overwriting your changes after updates (the add-on prompts you when there are updates, so you have the choice to decline the update).
