I am an MS2 at a US MD school. I am working with our faculty to integrate Anking Step Deck materials into our courses/curriculum. My faculty do not have the time to identify and tag cards from the Anking Step Deck on a per lecture basis. Various students have taken it upon themselves to tag cards per lecture and upload them as optional tags. This requires many man hours from students and is up to interpretation as to what should be tagged.
We would like to standardize this procedure and develop an AI tool that can be fed the syllabus/learning objectives of each lecture and then parse, select, and tag the relevant Anking Step Deck cards. Does a tool like this exist? If not, how can we develop one in tandem?
I’ll help you explore whether there’s an existing AI tool that can tag AnkiHub cards based on lecture objectives, or how you might develop such a solution. Let me search the community for any relevant information first.

Hi Ryan,
Based on your request for an AI tool to help tag AnKing Step Deck cards based on lecture learning objectives, I have some relevant information to share:
AnkiHub Smart Search
AnkiHub offers a feature called “Smart Search” as part of their Premium subscription that might help with what you’re looking for. This tool allows you to:
Input lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, and learning objectives
Automatically find relevant cards that match your content
Save time compared to manual tagging
Smart Search is designed to remove “the hassle of trying to find cards with tags or by manually browsing” - which sounds very similar to what you’re trying to accomplish.
Optional Tags Feature
For your curriculum integration project, you might also want to look at AnkiHub’s Optional Tag Groups feature. This allows:
Creation of separate tag structures for specific purposes (like your medical school)
Sharing these tags with other users (your students)
Collaborative tagging workflow
Recommendation
I would suggest:
Explore AnkiHub Premium’s Smart Search feature to see if it meets your needs for automated identification of relevant cards
Consider creating an Optional Tag Group for your school to organize the tagged content
Reach out to the AnkiHub team directly about your specific use case - they might have additional recommendations for curriculum integration
Since your request is specifically about automating the tagging process based on learning objectives, Smart Search appears to be the closest existing solution to what you’re looking for.
Would you like more information about these features or do you have specific questions about how they might work for your curriculum integration project?
Please let me know if that adequately captures what you’re thinking of, and/or if there is anything else I can do to be of help or any questions I can answer for you.
AI Smart Search seems to be a good tool for this job. Faculty may be hesitant to upload their proprietary material to an AI tool that they don’t have control over. Does AnkiHub have a public intellectual property policy on what is done with material uploaded to Smart Search? Is Smart Search available now or in the future to be run locally within our own network?
We are currently updating our terms of service to clarify this. It will be something like this:
uploaded docs may be stored securely and privately for the purposes of improving AnkiHub
they will never be shared or redistributed
not used to train models
Not at the moment and we don’t have plans for that. But it’s something we can consider in the future. E.g., configuring your own LLM provider and API keys so that no data is sent to our servers or anywhere else. Is that what you had in mind?
The other thing to mention is that data is processed according to the LLM provider’s terms. We have executed data processing addendums when possible. This will be detailed in the updates to our terms of service soon. E.g. we have executed this with OpenAI: https://openai.com/policies/data-processing-addendum/
Happy to chat with any faculty to understand their concerns and how we can accommodate them. We are keen on adding better support for faculty. Feel free to put them in touch! LMK if you have any other questions.
Also, please note that we are currently rebuilding and redesigning smart search at the moment. So you can expect significant improvements in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please try the search on the study aids tab here, which is an LLM-based tag search tool: Sign In
Yes, this is basically what I think many programs would want from an IP perspective.
Good to hear! I have not found Smart Search to be very effective. It may be user error. But it is hard to get a concise and accurate search using transcripts or files. Looking forward to improvements in the future
