Anki Desktop Issue: No New or Learn Cards Showing Up

I’m having a problem with Anki Desktop and can’t figure out what’s going on.

Across all of my decks, the New and Learn counts are showing as 0. When I study, the answer buttons show intervals like:

  • Again: <10m

  • Hard: 3 days

  • Good: 10 days

  • Easy: 23 days

If I press Hard, the card doesn’t come back during the session—it just moves on and is scheduled for a future date.

I expected some cards to still be in the New/Learn queue, but they’re not showing up. This seems to be happening across all decks, not just one.

Things I’m wondering:

  • Did I accidentally change a setting?

  • Could FSRS or a deck option be causing this?

  • Is there a way to check whether my cards were accidentally converted to review cards?

Any ideas on what settings or screenshots I should check would be appreciated.

Here are the most likely explanations and what to check next.

1. New/Learn = 0 across all decks

This usually means all cards are currently in review status and/or your daily limits are reached.

Please check:

  1. Deck options → New cards / Reviews limits

For one of the affected decks:

    1. Click the deck → Options (gear icon).
    2. On the New Cards tab:
      • Make sure “New cards/day” is not 0.
    3. On the Reviews tab:
      • Make sure “Maximum reviews/day” is not set too low (e.g. 10 or 20 when you have many more due).
    4. On the General tab:
      • Check “New cards ignore review limit” (in newer Anki versions). If this is off and your review limit is hit, new cards won’t appear.

Also make sure there are actually unsuspended new cards in the deck (Browser → filter by is:new).

2. Why your buttons show 10m / 3d / 10d / 23d

Those intervals indicate the cards you’re seeing are already review cards, not new/learning cards. That’s why:

  • Pressing Hard schedules it for 3 days later, not within the current session.
  • No Learn steps like “10m / 1d” are being shown.

To see card states:

  1. Open the Browser.
  2. In the left sidebar choose the deck.
  3. Use the search:
    • is:new – how many true new cards exist?
    • is:learn – how many learning cards?
    • is:review – how many review cards?

If is:new and is:learn both show 0 for many decks, then everything really has been converted to review.

3. Could FSRS or a deck option have converted cards?

  • FSRS itself does not convert new cards to review cards.
  • However, manual actions can:
    • Using the Browser and running Cards → Forget / Relearn / Reschedule… with “Place at end of new card queue” unchecked or rescheduling them to a date in the past.
    • Using an add‑on that mass‑reschedules cards.

You can check this in the Browser:

  • Select a suspicious card → Card Info (shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+Alt+I).
  • Look at Type (New / Learn / Review) and the review history.
If it shows multiple past reviews, it’s not new anymore.

There’s no perfect “undo” button if you changed types long ago, but you can:

  • Select cards → Cards → Forget to turn them back into new cards.
  • Or Cards → Reschedule to control due dates.

4. Things to screenshot that would help

If you want help narrowing this down on the forum, the most useful screenshots would be:

  1. Deck Options (for one affected deck):
    • New Cards tab.
    • Reviews tab.
    • General tab (if present in your Anki version).
  2. Deck list screen showing:
    • New / Learn / Review counts for a couple of decks.
  3. In the Browser:
    • A search for is:new on one of the problem decks, with the card count visible.
    • Card Info for one card that’s showing 10m / 3d / 10d / 23d.

Please post those screenshots (with personal data blurred) and we can help you pinpoint exactly which setting or action caused this and how to get your New/Learn queues back.

I’ve done all the common troubleshooting tips. I don’t understand what’s going on. Here is an image of my deck settings (same for all)

Hello,

Just one thing we need to clarify. You mentioned that the new card count is showing zero, but then you described how your interval buttons look. You do have new cards (the blue ones) and you are trying to review them, correct? If you didn’t have new cards, you wouldn’t even see the intervals.

Besides that, everything is working as expected. The cards will only come up again in the same session if you hit “Again,” because the learning step is set to 10 minutes. If you hit “Hard,” the cards are pushed three days into the future, and then, three days from now, the card will appear as a learn or review card depending on your settings.

The intervals may seem large, but that’s due to FSRS, which will optimize the more you review your cards. It’s totally normal to have some larger intervals sometimes. You can always click to reset your FSRS parameters in the settings if you feel something is wrong:

I see, the thing is I’m currently studying in a way where I will read a chapter, and then do the corresponding Anki. Once I finish that chapter, I suspend those cards. And alternatively when I read a new chapter I unsuspended and set my due date to that day. This has been working well for me until now. How can I get back to this?

Because normally, what would happen is when I’m learning that chapter, I press hard and then it goes into the red so within that session it will ask me that again at some point, not 3 days later. I have no idea what happened but it’s frustrating me because I want to continue my method of reviewing a chapter a day. Thanks for your help!

Oh, now I understand your goal. Yes, that’s totally possible within Anki. You can disable FSRS to switch back to the old SM-2 algorithm, where you can manually set your steps. This will achieve your goal, and it’s probably how you were doing it before.

After you disable FSRS, your new cards section will look like this, and you can enter your desired learning steps in the box shown in the screenshot.

Here is Anki’s explanation of how learning steps work:

Hi, I looked and my FSRS was already turned off, so I don’t think that was the problem and switching it on and off didn’t do anything. I just want the new cards to show up in new/learn so I’m being retested within the same session rather than only seeing it once, thanks!

Could you please share a screenshot of the new card section in your deck settings? The learning steps are what determine your intervals, so if you could tell me exactly what intervals you want for Again, Hard, Good, and Easy, I could help you set them up.
