New and Learning cards are not showing? And cards disappearing

Since I last updated Anki, I haven’t been able to see “new” or “learning” cards displayed in decks? The “due” cards show, but that is all. If I select “study now” on a deck, any cards I use will disappear from the “due” pile but don’t populate in the “learning” pile. They don’t rotate back in for review. I have checked that all cards are unsuspended. My new cards/day is set to 9999 and my maximum review/day is also set to 9999. The 2 decks I am using are the peds and surgery decks.

It looks like you’ve copied the Support category description into your post, but haven’t yet described your actual issue.

From your topic title (“New and Learning cards are not showing?”), it sounds like you’re expecting New and/or Learning cards from an AnkiHub‑synced deck, but they aren’t appearing in your reviews.

To help you properly (and keep this in the right scope for AnkiHub), please reply with the following:

  1. Deck & sync info

    • Which AnkiHub deck is this (name + link if possible)?
    • Are you using Anki Desktop with the AnkiHub add‑on, or AnkiMobile/AnkiDroid + AnkiHub web?
  2. What exactly is happening?

    • On the main Anki screen, what numbers do you see for that deck (New / Learning / Review)?
    • When you click the deck and press Study Now, what happens?
      • Do you only see Review cards?
      • Or is it saying “Nothing to study”?
  3. Key settings screenshots
Please attach screenshots of (from Anki Desktop, if you’re using it):

    • Deck → click the gear → Options →
      • New Cards tab (top part showing “New cards/day” and “Order”)
      • Reviews tab (top part: “Maximum reviews/day”)
      • Display Order tab (if present in your Anki version)
    • The deck list showing the deck’s New / Learn / Review counts.
  4. What you’ve already tried

    • Have you checked if the deck is suspended or if specific cards are suspended?
(Browser → select that deck → check if there’s a yellow pause icon on the cards.)
    • Have you recently changed the daily New cards or Maximum reviews per day settings?

Once you share that info (and ideally screenshots), I can help you:

  • Identify whether this is an Anki scheduling/settings issue vs.
  • Something related to the AnkiHub deck setup (e.g., Only_Step tags, deck presets, suspensions).

If you discover the issue is purely general Anki behavior (not related to AnkiHub decks/add‑on), we’ll then want you to post on the official Anki Support Forum, but let’s first check the AnkiHub‑related possibilities here.

A few things to check that commonly cause this, especially after an update:

1. Check which deck you’re actually clicking

On the deck list, if you click a parent deck, Anki’s v3 scheduler will apply that deck’s limits and the limits of its children. But if you instead click directly into a subdeck (e.g. Surgery vs Step 2/3 – Surgery), the counts shown on the home screen can be misleading.

Please:

  1. On the deck list, click directly on the exact deck name you’re studying (e.g. your Peds or Surgery subdeck).
  2. When the Study Overview opens, look at the breakdown at the top:
    New | Learning | Review
    • Do you see non‑zero counts for New or Learning there?
    • If yes, click Study Now – sometimes only reviews are due today, even though you have many unsuspended new cards overall.

2. Check per‑deck limits (subdecks!)

Even though your global preset shows New: 9999 and Reviews: 9999, each subdeck can still have its own limits.

For each of your Peds and Surgery decks:

  1. On the deck list, click the gear icon next to the deck → Options.
  2. Confirm that:
    • New cards/day is high (you already showed 9999, good).
    • Maximum reviews/day is also high.
  3. At the top, make sure these decks are actually using the same preset you changed (e.g. “AnkiHub tuned by 4 decks”), and that you didn’t accidentally adjust a different preset than the one Peds/Surgery use.

If the subdeck uses a different preset with New=0 or Rev=0, you’ll only see due reviews (or nothing new at all).

3. Check the “New cards ignore review limit” toggle

In your screenshot, “New cards ignore review limit” is turned on (blue). On v3:

  • If this were off, a very large number of reviews could block new cards.
  • Since it’s on, this should allow new cards even if reviews are high, so the setting itself is probably not the cause – but if you have a different preset for Peds/Surgery, its toggle might be off.

So again, confirm this toggle in the exact preset attached to Peds/Surgery, not just your “AnkiHub tuned by 4 decks” example.

4. Make sure the cards are actually “New”, not buried or in another deck

For the Surgery/Peds decks:

  1. Open the deck → click Browse.
  2. In the left sidebar, select that specific deck.
  3. At the top search bar, enter:
    is:new

    • Do you see a non‑zero number of cards?
  4. Then search:
    is:learn

    • Any cards there?

If these return 0 cards, then there simply aren’t any New/Learning cards in those decks anymore (everything is in review). In that case, only “Due” will ever show.

If there are New/Learning cards but they’re not appearing:

  • Check Cards → Toggle bury siblings in the browser, and in Deck Options → New Cards, make sure nothing strange is going on with “Bury related new cards” (though that usually won’t hide all news/learning).

5. Quick sanity checks

  • Scheduler version: In Anki, go to Tools → Preferences → Scheduling and confirm:
    • Anki 2.1 scheduler (v3) is enabled (recommended).
  • AnkiHub presets: If Peds and Surgery came from AnkiHub, they may have their own assigned option group. Double‑check that you didn’t accidentally change a different preset than the one those decks use.

If you can, please share:

  1. A screenshot of:
    • The Study Overview screen for one of the decks you’re using (after you click that deck).
  2. In the browser (for that same deck), the counts for:
    • is:new
    • is:learn

With those two screenshots it’ll be much easier to pinpoint whether this is:

  • A limit/preset issue, or
  • Simply that all cards are already in Review for those decks.

A few things to check that commonly cause this after an update:

1. Make sure you’re inside the subdeck you study

On the deck list, if you click a parent deck (e.g. “AnKing Overhaul” or “Peds/Surgery parent”), Anki’s v3 scheduler will respect each child deck’s own limits. Sometimes people click the wrong level and think cards disappeared.

  • Click directly on the Peds deck.
  • Then click directly on the Surgery deck.
See if the New/Learning counts appear when you’re on those specific decks.

2. Check you don’t have a huge review backlog

With the v3 scheduler, new cards are capped by the review limit:

If your review limit is 9999 and you already have 9999 due reviews, then 0 new cards will be introduced.

From your screenshot your limits are 9999/9999, but if those are already “used up” by overdue reviews, Anki will show only review cards and no new/learning on the deck overview.

To test this quickly:

  1. Go to Deck Options → Daily Limits for your Peds/Surgery deck.
  2. Temporarily lower Maximum reviews/day to something small (e.g. 50) and turn OFF “New cards ignore review limit”.
  3. Or, alternatively, suspend a chunk of old reviews (e.g. via a filtered search like is:review is:due in the Browser and Suspend) to reduce the backlog.
  4. Then restart Anki and check whether new cards start appearing.

If you want new cards regardless of your review backlog, in 2.1.61+ you can enable “New cards ignore review limit” in that same Options screen. Just be cautious; it can lead to very high daily workload.

3. Confirm there are actually new/learning cards available

In the Browse window:

  • Search deck:Peds is:new and deck:Surgery is:new.
  • Also check for is:learn in those decks.

If those searches return zero, then all cards might already be in review status or suspended in another deck.

4. Check for filtered decks / custom study

If you recently used Custom Study or filtered decks:

  • Make sure your cards are back in their home decks (click “Empty” on any filtered decks you’re no longer using).
  • Then look again at the Peds and Surgery deck counts.

If you can, could you post:

  1. A screenshot of the deck list that includes the Peds and Surgery decks with their New/Learning/Review counts visible, and
  2. A screenshot of the Browse window filtered to deck:Peds is:new?

That will make it easier to tell whether it’s the v3 limits, a backlog, or something else going on with those AnkiHub decks.

Hello,

I would be happy to help.

You might take a look at some of the bot’s responses, just in case it covered well any of the options available to you

From there, just to eliminate the risk of overlooking something obvious: can you share a screenshot of your Browse screen showing that there are new cards to be learned and that they are in that deck?

If you can share a few screenshots that should be helpful in troubleshooting and hopefully getting you squared away. :mending_heart:

Thank you! This is the browse screen. I also was editing my original post when you replied, so I don’t know if you saw the addition that says: If I select “study now” on a deck, any cards I use will disappear from the “due” pile but don’t populate in the “learning” pile. I’m trying some of the bot’s responses now to see if they change anything.

Gotcha, thanks for that.

Just for clarity, from the image you showed all of the cards visible appear to have due dates (meaning that they are, by definition, not ‘new’ cards):

Are you certain that there are new cards in the deck? And, if so, can you share a screenshot of them?

I’m not sure if I entirely follow, my apologies. If a card was due and you reviewed it, it is normal for it no longer appear in the due pile. And, since it’s not a ‘learning card’ it also won’t be expected to show up in the learning pile.

But, again here, screenshots are ideal just so I can see what you see

Normally when studying a deck if I’ve selected hard or again the card will appear in the learning pile or remain in the due pile until I get the card correct and select good. Currently the card disappears from the due pile and never returns to be reviewed again. Can you explain how to see if there are new cards in the deck? I’m a little technologically inept. I tried putting ‘deck:Surgery is:new’ into the search and ‘deck:#AK_Step2_v12::!Shelf::Surgery::no_dupes is:new’. Neither showed any result. I’m not sure if that means none of them are new or if I’m just doing something wrong in my search.

Just to make sure: does the card never return, or does it return after a handful of minutes (typically the length of time of your ‘again’ interval)?

From what I can see, it does not necessarily look like there are any new cards in the deck. Which might be the simplest explanation for why new cards are not appearing for that deck.

You can double-check by clicking on your deck from the Browse screen, and then command+click the ‘new’ designation. So you’d have something like:

“deck:AnKing Step Deck” is:new

Where the deck name would correspond to the deck you’re wanting to look at, obviously
