Updating Your AnkiHub Deck with New Subdecks

Hi there! I understand you’re trying to add a new topic/subdeck to your private AnkiHub deck and share it, but it’s not showing up on the AnkiHub website. Let me help you with this.

How AnkiHub Handles Subdecks

According to the documentation, AnkiHub handles subdecks in a specific way:

  1. Notes within an AnkiHub deck are not organized into subdecks on the website
  2. Instead, each note can have a subdeck tag that indicates which subdeck it belongs to
  3. These subdeck tags look like: AnkiHub_Subdeck::MyDeck::Subdeck

Adding a New Subdeck to an Existing Deck

Currently, there’s a limitation with subdecks in AnkiHub:

Note: Currently there is no easy way to add subdeck support to an existing AnkiHub deck. At the moment it is only supported for new decks you create. We are working on making it possible to use this feature with all decks.

This might be why your new subdeck isn’t showing up on the AnkiHub website.

Workaround Options

Here are some potential approaches you could try:

  1. Add subdeck tags manually: Add the appropriate AnkiHub_Subdeck::YourDeck::NewSubdeck tag to notes you want in the new subdeck.

  2. Update through the add-on: After adding your subdeck locally in Anki, use the AnkiHub add-on to sync your changes:

    • Go to the main Anki window → AnkiHub → Subscribed Decks
    • Enable subdeck option for your deck
    • Sync your changes
  3. Create new cards with proper subdeck tags: When creating new cards for your new topic, make sure they have the correct subdeck tag.

For Private Decks Specifically

Since you mentioned your deck is private, remember that:

  • Only you and any maintainers you’ve added can see the deck
  • To invite subscribers to your private deck:
    • Go to my decks
    • Click the “…” options button
    • Select “Invite People”
    • Enter the username of the person you want to invite

If you continue to have trouble with sharing your updated deck, you might want to reach out to AnkiHub support directly as there may be specific limitations with subdeck handling in the current version.

Hello,

Just to make sure I understand your problem correctly: you own a private AnkiHub deck that already contains subdecks, but you’re having trouble adding new ones. Is that right?

If so, here is the correct process for adding new subdecks:

  1. Tag Your Cards: First, you need to add the correct subdeck tag to all the cards you want to place in a new subdeck, following the format the bot instructed: AnkiHub_Subdeck::YourDeck::NewSubdeck

  2. Suggest Changes to AnkiHub: After tagging the cards locally, you must “Suggest” these changes to AnkiHub. This updates the deck on the server.

  3. Sync Updates: After you’ve done this, everyone with access to the deck will be able to sync, and the cards will be placed into their proper subdecks.

If the subdecks still aren’t being created correctly, here are two troubleshooting steps:

Let me know if this solves your problem! If not, please try to give us more details so we can help you better.

hi!! so this didnt end up working, how did you have the option to “rebuild subdecks and move cards into subdecks” thats not working for me and I dont have that feature. my subdecks are enabled

and will this work for maintainers as well? I have one other maintainer on the group, so can they add cards with the subdeck tags and will they filter into the correct sundeck?

Hello,

Please try updating both your Anki application and the AnkiHub add-on. Here’s how:

1. To update your Anki application:

  • Go to https://apps.ankiweb.net/ and download the latest version.
  • Once the file is downloaded, simply run it, and Anki will update automatically.

2. To update the AnkiHub add-on:

  • From the Anki main screen, navigate to Tools > Add-ons > Check for Updates. Restart Anki after that.

Yes, this process should work for everyone who has the deck and syncs the updates.

Let me know if that helps!
