Ankihub ID Pending and issues during bulk suggest

Hi,

I’ve been suggesting notes to my AnkiHub deck, but many notes are creating issues during bulk suggestions. I’ve had this issue for years and it’s never been solved, but I just realized that the cards causing problems are showing as “AnkiHub ID pending.” I don’t know why that would be, since they are part of the deck I originally uploaded or have been suggested (without needing review). I’ve attempted bulk suggesting many times, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

You can see the discrepancy between the number of notes marked “without changes” and those that “failed to submit.”

The deck has 1503 notes. 492 are recognized as unchanged. 18 do get changed. That leaves 993 notes that seem to have changes but fail to submit – 993 is also the number of notes in the deck that, for whatever reason, lack an AnkiHub ID. How do I solve this?

Second question: How come when I try to bulk suggest the whole deck (without need for review) again and again, I keep getting 18 changed notes submitted? If they are submitted without needing review, why doesn’t the system recognize them as notes without changes?

Thanks for your help,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I understand you’re facing two issues with your AnkiHub deck: many notes showing “AnkiHub ID pending” status and problems with bulk suggestions. Let me help address both concerns.

Issue 1: AnkiHub ID Pending

When notes show “AnkiHub ID pending,” it typically means these notes haven’t been properly synchronized with the AnkiHub server. The 993 notes without AnkiHub IDs are likely causing your bulk suggest failures.

Possible solutions:

  1. Try submitting in smaller batches: Instead of suggesting all 993 notes at once, try submitting them in smaller groups (perhaps 50-100 at a time).

  2. Check note compatibility: Ensure all notes use AnkiHub-compatible note types. Notes with custom fields or non-standard formats might cause issues.

  3. Refresh AnkiHub connection: Try:

    • Logging out of AnkiHub add-on and logging back in
    • Restarting Anki completely
    • Making sure your AnkiHub add-on is updated to the latest version
  4. Contact support: If the above steps don’t work, you may need direct assistance from the AnkiHub team, as this appears to be a persistent issue related to how the notes were initially added to your deck.

Issue 2: 18 Changed Notes Repeatedly Submitting

Regarding your second question about the 18 notes that keep showing as “changed” when you bulk suggest:

This behavior suggests there might be something in these notes that the system consistently identifies as different from what’s on the server. This could be due to:

  • Invisible formatting differences
  • Special characters or spacing issues
  • Fields that appear identical but contain different hidden formatting
  • Possible synchronization issues between the local and server versions

These notes might have metadata or formatting that differs from what’s stored on the AnkiHub server, causing them to be flagged as changed with each submission.

If you’ve tried multiple times and these 18 notes keep appearing as changed, you might want to examine them individually to see if there’s anything unusual or if there’s a pattern among them.

For persistent technical issues like these, you may want to reach out to AnkiHub support directly through the “Getting Help” channels available on the community site.

Hello,

Let’s try to tackle this with a bit more information:

  • Does this also happen when the suggestions are made individually?

  • Please go to Help → About on your Anki main screen so we can check which version of Anki you’re running.

  • Do the cards display correctly on the AnkiHub website?

  • When you bulk suggest the entire deck and get the results you showed, did all the cards have changes that were supposed to be submitted?

  • Lastly, are you making sure all these cards use the same note type and that it’s the correct note type for your AnkiHub deck?

With this information, we’ll be able to troubleshoot the issue more effectively!

I notice the other user is asking for more information to help troubleshoot your issue. While we wait for your response to their questions, let me provide some additional context that might be helpful.

The “AnkiHub ID pending” status typically occurs when notes haven’t been properly registered with the AnkiHub server. This can happen for several reasons:

  1. The notes might have been created locally but not yet suggested to the AnkiHub deck
  2. There might have been synchronization issues during previous bulk suggestions
  3. The notes might be using incompatible note types for AnkiHub

When troubleshooting bulk suggestion failures, it’s important to verify:

  • You’re using the latest version of both Anki and the AnkiHub add-on
  • The notes are using AnkiHub-compatible note types
  • Your AnkiHub account has the proper permissions for the deck
  • Your internet connection is stable during the suggestion process

As the other user mentioned, trying to suggest a single note (rather than bulk) might help identify if there’s a specific issue with certain notes. If individual suggestions work while bulk fails, that could indicate a timeout or server-side limitation.

Once you provide the additional information they’ve requested about your Anki version, note types, and whether individual suggestions work, we’ll be better positioned to help solve this persistent issue.

This suggests they are not in your local AnkiHub database for some reason. Can you use AnkiHub > Help > Upload logs and post the filename shown?

ankihub_addon_logs_ploirodon_1745828058.log

depends, sometimes individual suggestions have been suggested just fine. heres an example of one of those id pending ones and i got this:

It so many and with limited time I havent been checking them against the website. my friend who uses my deck to study claims not to have gotten all of my edits and updates that I make as I progress in studying the cards myself.

No not all the cards had edits but many did. i tend to sort my date modified after a study and edit session and upload those but in case I forget some or if I eg update tags I do bulk suggest a large amount often the whole deck to make sure I catch any changes since noone else is contributing to my deck.

generally yes the ID pending and normal cards have the same note type from what I can see, except for one image occlusion that i added in case i need to make some later on after the ankihub deck has been created.
the deck shows as different here but thats just a filtered deck for some cards and the issue existed before I created that filtered deck

I’m sure the issue is that your local AnkiHub database is not up-to-date for some reason, but the add-on doesn’t yet have a way to fix/reset the database.

Can you try this?

  1. Go to the C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\AnkiHub folder (~/Library/Application Support/AnkiHub on macOS).
  2. Back up all folders (the ones with random names) there to a different place and delete them from there.
  3. Go to Anki. Log in again to AnkiHub and sync.

Hi abdo, sorry for the long wait. I followed the steps. I assume reinstalling the deck is what I should do?

then this:

I assume it edited all my cards that were not having an ankihub ID cause now all cards do have it.
But I assume since it modified 100s of cards that they are now some older version (likly from when I created the deck) since it never successfully submitted most of my note changes to ankihub after I edited and tried to bulk suggest them. If thats true (and I can see it is because most cards have empty extras where there should be hints, additional info etc. that I added why studying) then how do I now get all my current versions back?

Oh. You need to revert to a backup, protect fields where you made changes, then sync again.

You can use one of the recent automatic backups kept by Anki: Backups - Anki Manual

To avoid losing your study progress in the last couple of days, though, please follow these steps:

  1. Identify a recent backup file (see previous link for location) before you did the recent AnkiHub sync that overwrote your edits.
  2. Create a new Anki profile and import the backup file there.
  3. Export your deck as .apkg.
  4. Go to your main profile and import the .apkg file. Make sure the Update notes option is set to Always.

Oh ok. Yesterday I needed to keep studying so I just forced a sync from anki web and got my latest state back that way. Now ofc the cards are showing ankihub ID pending again.
Just be sure when I do this again to see if it fixes the issue, should I protect fields where I made changes (is there button for that somewhere?) and then follow yesterdays steps again? Or follow yesterdays steps and then get my stuff back from a backup etc just how you described? Thank you!

Yes, you should protect the fields. Please see 🔐 Protecting Fields and Tags

You don’t need to follow the backup steps if you got your edits back.
